Sunny
Total Time = 1h 25m 55s
Overall Rank = 116/392
Age Group = 25-29
Age Group Rank = 13/45
Pre-race routine:

got up at the buttcrack of 4:15
ate some oatmeal
rocked out to "the best of warrant" all the way to the Y
Event warmup:

walked out the transitions

Swim
  • 08m
  • 400 meters
  • 02m / 100 meters
Comments:

easy peasy, lap swim. passed two girls, never got passed. by the time i was in the pool it had started to get a little rough but no biggie.
What would you do differently?:

seeded myself even faster :)
Transition 1
  • 01m 26s
Comments:

fastest T1 in my AG! woo! and here i thought i was a total slowpoke in transition.
What would you do differently?:

apparently nothing. i need to get better at bike on/off
Bike
  • 42m 12s
  • 11.4 miles
  • 16.21 mile/hr
Comments:

i had practiced the course 2 weekends before and knew what to expect. i got passed by 8 or 9 riders, but waited for that flat at the end to attack a handful of my AG.
What would you do differently?:

get better at bike on/off. really why am i such a dump. push a LOT harder. if i had the energy to pass 3 girls on the last mile, why was i holding back the other 10???
Transition 2
  • 01m 22s
Comments:

this is where i was SUPER slow, just taking my time changing shoes drinking water, DREADING the run
What would you do differently?:

not be so effing slow in transition, remember to drink on the bike so i don't HAVE to drink in transition
Run
  • 32m 57s
  • 3.11 miles
  • 10m 35s  min/mile
Comments:

i hate running. i suck at running. imagine my surprise when i hit mile 1 and my watch read 9:24. uh oh. i went out a LEEEEETLE too hard. from there the miles dropped to 10:30 and 11:30, but I never stopped to walk. coming in the last half mile or so chatted with a girl about how we only had five minutes left, couldn't wait to get under the sprinklers by the pool.

pushed as hard as i could through the grass/chute run, to vomit threshold. my last sprint 5K was 34 minutes, my goal for this one was 33, and I DID IT!
What would you do differently?:

pace better. start with an 11 min mile and get down to 9 on the last 1.1. i need a garmin type device. my lack of ability to pace is destroying my running - both in training and races.
Post race
Warm down:

found shade. got a massage. drank lots of powerade. went out to breakfast with jen (artemis) and her husband and my boyfriend. YUM COUNTRY OMELETTE.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

lack of run training.

Event comments:

I had a blast and will do this one next year, if not just to PR the course. Also, not nearly as physically exhausting as the Tavern. I got right back into training no prob the next day.

thanks!  to be fair, its only a triathlon 5K PR, i can run a standalone faster, the pacing coming out of T2 is what gets me.

All your averages were better than the Tavern! Awesome!  Maybe I should sign up for the Patriot Oly so you can pace me... maybe not.  I'll stick with the sprint.  And what's up with the stairs coming off the swim?  How many people busted there a$$ going down those?

ha, that was my big fear going into the race.  painted wooden steps when wet...yikers.  they put a long mat before the steps and i decided to not worry about speed and be careful.

DO THE OLY

Great job! You are doing extremely well for someone so new to the sport. I hope to see you and the other BTers at the Patriot Oly except my ankle is still sore from spill I had at the Tavern and yesterday I strained my right calf. Hopefully all will be well by September but us old people (over 40) heal slowly.

I did a 30 mile bike a few days ago and the though of doing a 10k after an Oly bike leg concerns me too.

it was definitely a fun day, although, as jen pointed out, "a little too much estrogen for me" at times

Was there really a Chippendales water stop? Anything else you wouldn't normally see at a standard tri?

At mile 2 there were a bunch of guys in nothing but tri shorts and bowties.  They were dancing a little, too.  Definitely the push I needed before attacking the last mile - which was all uphill.

All the volunteers were men, and except for the chippendales guys, wore "triathlete chics are hot" shirts.  It was cool.
