Anyone doing Galena Triathlon (www.galena.org/triathlon) next Saturday, May 21st?

Let's try to hook up perhaps.  I'm staying at the Ramada in Galena.

Oh man!  I did not know about this tri, but I LOVE LOVE LOVE Galena, my husband and I go there at least twice a year. If you're spending the weekend, make sure you eat at Vinny Vanucchi's - the best Italian restaurant ever.  And get Pasta a la Vinny.

I am definitely putting this on my calendar for next year!  Best of luck to you!

I'm not doing it this year, but plan on doing it next year. I'm originally from Galena - born and raised for 18 years. My family all still lives there (except my sister who lives in Cedar Rapids). I figured that tri would give me a good reason to go back home and visit the family! Sounds like Tania's got a grip on the town, but if you have any questions about anything feel free to get in touch. Some of my favorite restaurants, though, are Backstreet Steak & Chop House (my cousin owns it so I'm inclined to like it), Cannova's, and Taco Pizza from Happy Joe's!! I can almost taste it now. And if you stop in at the winery (Galena Cellars) you can say hi to my mom.

I'll be looking forward to the race report. I heard it was raining last year and they had to cancel the swim or something like that. Good luck!

Yo!

I'm doing Galena. I didn't know you were too. Cool!

I'm staying at a B&B in Galena. I forget which one, and I can't find my reservation. I should probably track that down!

I'm in for Galena, can't wait! Staying at a B&B near town, I think it is called the John Henry Guest House. Leaving Friday afternoon to drive up. I'd be up for meeting after the race, if I can still walk. Sort of afraid of the hilly bike ride.

Should be a great race!!!!!!!!

One piece of advice: bring a wetsuit hood, and earplugs. You might need them. Coupla years ago the water was in the (low) 50's. Got an instant, severe head and earache when I hit the water. Also go a pretty cool demostration of the mammalian diving reflex. I felt my throat tighten and watched my heart rate drop like a rock. All in good fun on a medical basis, but not when you are trying to hammer a swim :^)

CHILLLY WILLLLY!!!! Good Luck you guys... The ONLY reason I don't do that race is because I'm a weather whimp! It can still SNOW in May!!!

I read the participant guide and it sounds more of a cluster-f**k than I'm sure it really is...

does anyone have any advice for navigating this PTP race?  where is the best place to keep my recovery drink and change of clothes (i.e. warm clothes)?  Can I access my bike in T2 shortly after I finish the race?

How close can I get my car to the finish?  Perhaps I keep my change of clothes and recovery drink in my car if it's not too far...

I have no idea on that, I planned to figure that stuff out on Friday, after bike check-in and stuff.

Who's up for a group "figure this puppy out"?

This weekend.....race is on 5/21.

So I am seeing now it might be a duathlon. CRAP! I hate running last, but running first and last? Shoot. Crossing my fingers the locals will start peeing in the lake or something to warm it up.

just kidding. sort of.

Ok.  Can I vent for a second?

Now the race director said they won't hold the swim (change race to a Du) if the water temp is below 60 degrees.

WHAT THE HELL?

Are you kidding me?  Everyone's going to be wearing a wetsuit anyway, and if they're not, it's only a 600 meter swim.  It's not like you're gonna be in the water for 30 minutes!!

Ok, now they're saying they may "shorten" the swim if it's too cold.

TO WHAT?  A 5 minute swim?  I mean c'mon Mr./Ms. Race Director, are you freggin' serious?!?!  How can you shorten a 600 meter swim?  Wait....I got an idea...why doesn't everyone just put one toe in the water then jump on their bikes?

My friends and I are are all pretty upset as to how wussy the race director is being.

You post the predicted water temp, recommend people wear wetsuits, have people sign wavers just like any other race.  I did a 1/2 IM in Racine and 2 years ago the water temp was 58 degrees....they didn't shorten that swim or turn that into a Du.  Besides they said anyone can switch to the Du at race check-in.

What gives?  Why are the race directors being such wusses?  Seriously....

100% agree. What does 2 extra degrees matter?

I was wondering the same thing, how much more can you shorten a 600 yd swim? I only have one pair of good running shoes, my oher pair are really old and not worth running in. I didn't really plan for a DU, and really now do not want to run out to buy another pair of shoes for it.

So I either run the first leg in my old crappy shoes or someone figure out how to tie my runners to my bike to bring to T2.

Sigh. I don't need this stress.

What time is everyone heading out to Galena? We are not leaving until 2ish, dropping my son off at grandma and grandpa's house, and they won't be there until 1.
