I get that it will hurt Miami Man, but couple things..
Miami Man course is not a true 70.3..the bike is short, the run is long..so, for someone who really wants to do a true 70.3 race (M-dot sponsored or not), Miami doesn't cut it.
I personally am not a huge fan of the Multirace organization, that does not mean I want to see them hurt, jsut means I don't really liek them and oh well..business is business and it's not liek they weren't apporached by Ironman to have Miami converted...

I do think that it will bring other people from out the the state to do this race..it is a late in the season 70.3 and it can only help with tourism./econonmy down here..so I am all for it..I already am talkngi to my coach about participating.

Bike is around 53..gotta look at my reports to get the exact.  And the run is around 14...I remember the OLy being 6.6, not 6.2 and th HIm is 2 loops...so probably even more than 14.

I too am very excited about the oppty to do a HIM in 13 months from now.

- This should be doable for me and many other BTers here in FL.  My only worry is paying for a race that far in advance. Lots of stuff can happen in 13 months...    I wish we get weather like today's (Tampa 81 @ noon)

PS  6.6 x 2 = 13.2, right?  Isn't the half mary 13.1?
move the T2-Exit 0.05 mi, like, on the South of transition and have the finish line on the North side...  fixed.

Now, anyone who can't get into the M-Dot race has another race to choose.  I also wished they put some time between the 2 races but that's what the dice rolled.

I need to check no the run..it is not just 13.2 miles..it is more..but without getting my garmin info out, I can't tell you the right #...All I know is the run is long and the bike is short...I've done this race a few times in the past and it is the same course every year...

I'm not going to get in a stupid arguments about the distances....but...Looks like piperfl  had a bad experience with the people of MultiRace.com and wishes the worse to the people of Miami Man...You want to play dirty adding bad comments....Great...!!! And Yes Go to check your Garmin...You are not the only one with Garmin...

And the other point here is that Ironman has done a dirty move with the Miami Man not only here....with other local 1/2 Iron Distances in other states....

Here is my answer:

I have been racing this one since 2005 and I'm involved in the Miami Man since...in the Bike Course....I'm not going to denie that the bike course is  a little shorter...but...not like piper said...and...it can vary depending on your cyclocomputer...but it's not less than 54...it's in between 54 and 55 miles almost the 55 miles according with all the people that every year take part in the Miami Man Bike Orientation and Race...and...other factor...every year the size of Transition has growed up since 2004...

And the run it's exactly the distance....6.6 miles for the International and 13.1 for the 1/2 Iron ...I put my 2 cent in that...

I have been racing with the people of MultiRace.com since 2003....and...They are the best Organization of all South Florida....all their Events are Excellent and very Well Organized...and...The Miami Man is one of them....

Lenorea,
I wasn't looking ot start an argument and I did not talk down about Multi race at all, so please do not assume that I had a bad experience with them.  YEs, I will say they are not my favorite, but I don't need to get into why that is...this is not the place.  All I stated was the bike was short and run is long...I am sure I am not the only one to back it up . I get that you are apart of them and help them with their bike course etc..but sorry, I am stating facts...

I agree with verorider.  I think this is Ironman's way to squeezing out the competition.  Miami Man has before been completely sold out but this year, it took a long time due to the economy.  There will be additional draw from farther out participants that would not do the Miami Man, but a lot of the Miami Man participants would do the Mdot race instead if the costs are close.  So for Multirace to have a shot they have to make less money and that is not fair.... except for the capitalism part.
This will be my first Miami Man this year but I have only heard the best things.  Maybe Miami man can move the race weekend a bit.  They might have too.

this is my first HIM.  since i have started racing and i have heard pretty good things on MiamiMan.  the run is supposed to be quite fun and the swim is quite nice.  the race is sold out this year, so it will be 1500 or 1600 not sure now.

as far as multirace they seem to always do a good job, they had a couple of hicups this year with the credit card issues but that can happend to anyone.

as far as the IM miami 70.3 I am sure it will be a nice race, it will be nice to try out an IM venue and see what that is all about and maybe even try for 1 of the 50 spots for Clearwater.  But scheduling a race 7 days before another HIM is a low blow.

IM is a big venue but why mess with other races...i don't get it.  ESPECIALLY in a growing sport.  the thing that really sucks is people that want to do a HIM will really try to get into the IM Miami race now rather then MiamiMan.  This plus economy....it will be interesting.

And here is the answer form MultiRace.com and some well know south floridian triathletes about the Miami Ironman 70.3...

http://www.sun-sentinel.com/sports/other/sfl-ironman-triathlon-s100109sboct01,0,7726608.story

Also they interviewed the guy from World Triathlon Corp....a little arrogant when he said "People has to understand the food chain"...LOL

At the end of the day my friends, we, the 'triathlete" people, are contributing to both venues by spreading the word, stating our points of views, and generally creating more and higher expectations and fuzz about something out of our control.

I say we let the two companies battle it out if that's what they want, and let each one of us support both races (maybe by racing one and volunteering at the other), and we just help the sport grow.  F%^ tourism and whatever else was mentioned as a reason (I do agree it's necessary and part of our Floridian identities, so live with it), ultimately we do what we think is best for each of us individually, and we can do that thanks to democracy and yes, capitalism too.

Lets not fight it between ourselves, we're not rival gangs. Let's all push in the same direction.  I already offered an option, get creative and tell us how you would make this work, rather than what you want different.  AMEN!   Tongue out

Tough call, but nothing wrong with competition in my opinion. Miami Man always sells out which means there is demand for second race. Wish it was at least a month or so apart, but... Both can co-exist. The Iroman 70.3 will bring a lot of folks from out of the area and that is goof for tourism as someone mentioned. It will also fill the field pretty quickly. Wonder when it will fill up?

About time an Ironman Event makes it to South Florida. Outside of the road logistics, I always thought the keys would be a GREAT place to hold largescale Ironman event. But with one road in most the area, I imagine not realistic.

IMHO, the Bike @ Miami Man is closer to 54. The run may be right, but it is close.

As great would it be to have 2 HIMs in Miami it's somewhere between dumb and rotten for Ironman to out theirs within two weeks of MiamiMan. That Miami Man sells out tells me there's room for both, so having the races next to each other just cannibalizes the athlete pool in such a tiny interval. Why not fit the race in March when the only other stateside event is in CA and the only other big race in SoFla is the new(ish) MIT?

Edit: I just read that Sentinel article and it looks like Ironman hired Excel, the guys that do MIT and the new Miami Nice Oli, so I guess that's why March is out.

I'm agree with you about..Why not in March???  but...

You want to know WHY not in March...cuz...M.I.T. and and Ironman Miami 70.3 have the same Race Director....You got it...!!!

I think it is cool that there is an Ironman brand event in so Fla. I did Augusta this year as my first HIM. I wanted my first to be an Ironman race. Thats just me. I do many of Multiraces events and think they always do a great job so I hate to see if there race suffers. But Ironman Miami will bring in more people like me that want to do a brand event. Now that I have one under my belt that is not as important until I do a full. Both races interfere with me doing NYC marathon next year so I wont be ther anyway.

I think it's exciting to see an mdot race in town but a bummer that it may hurt multirace. multirace is by far my favorite local race director, they are a high class organization, and the last thing I want to see is the little guy getting stepped on.

I want to do my first HIM next year but unfortunately neither of these races work for me due to work and school time commitments. I'm thinking about Augusta, GA...or the new ironman Boulder that was just bought from 5430 sports. in my case this does show that people are willing to travel for the ironman brand...

I just checked out the course map. The location is great and it's a nice long ride with no loops and almost no turns. Run looks great too heading down MacArthur Causeway. It will be scenic, but also no shade or relief from the sun. I think the swim is going to be gross. That piece of the bay is pretty murky, even at high tide. I just checked and low tide on that date will be at 9:04AM. Yuck.

I will admit it...
Been doing sprints all of 2009, and my HIM distance goal was for 2011 but having an INAUGURAL WTC IM event bit hard.  I'm signed up.  I wasn't as enthusiastic for Miamiman, in fact, didn't even know about it as I wasn't looking at the distance yet.

Now, it's real focused training time for me.  And I love it.
