hoberg2 - 2009-10-17 2:05 PM Let's see if we can get a list of Half Ironman Triathlons that have fairly flat Bike/Run courses and generous cut-off times for those "Clydesdales" considering first time at this distance.

I've come up with Redman (Oklahoma City), Soma (Tempe, AZ), White Lake (North Carolina), and Lonestar (Corpus Christi) as good first time "Clydesdale Friendly" Half Ironmans.  Any thoughts?  Any others to consider?

I didn't know Corpus Christi had a HIM....I wanna do that one

Lonestar 70.3 (Austin) isn't too bad.  This Sunday will be my 3rd time.  Bike has some rollers but not bad.  Run has one BIG hill but even most of the 'skinnies' walk up it.  Can be hot, can be windy.  (The more I type, the less friendly it sounds.)  Overall, though, very well run and a good time!

Eagleman is a great Clyde friendly bike and run course.  The only x factor is the potential wind.  Take it from me as a true clyde......I had the fastest bike split of any 1/2 i've done.

I lived in Austin for 6 years.  Both of my kids were born there but they don't remember it so they want to visit to see the area.  I'm seriously considering doing this one in 2010.  I think they would have a lot of fun.

hahah on the "skinnies."

I really enjoyed the Montreal Esprit Olympic Triathlon (also in  Sprint, HIM or IM distance).
The course is  perfectly flat because you bike on the Montreal F1 race course. Its a ~5km loop of perfectly paved blacktop - you can really lay down speed.
The swim is in the 1976 Olympics rowing basin  - a 2km long, 200m wide pool.
The run is a perfectly flat loop around the rowing basin.

I noticed that too but the words "Longhorn" and "Lonestar" are heard so frequently in Austin, TX I didn't bother question it.  I looked up their 70.3 and I noticed their 56 mile bike course only had a total elevation climb of around 1000ft.  Is that correct?  I know there are parts of Austin which can be very hilly.  There are definitely flat parts as well but 1000ft doesn't sound right.  Heck, I have a 15 mile training course that I have used, that has around 2500ft.

My first half was Boise, Idaho. Mostly flat bike, plus a very flat run course in downtown Boise.

Ditto on races mentioned:

Spirit of Racine (sign up is Nov 1)
Steelhead 70.3 (can register now)

Can't do both cuz they are less than a week apart.

I also head the Muncie Endurathon in Indiana is a very good flat fast race. Not as well known as Racine or Steelhead races.  You could do it if you do the aquabike of this one then Steelhead or Racine.

My "A" race is Steelhead or Racine, but I will probably do the Muncie aquabike.

Good luck

I don't think it is clyde friendly but I am shooting for Timberman next year. Whats the fun in doing a HIM if you don't kill yourself on some serious hills? Although I will be crying up them probably.

this bike course is rolling hills,, it's not that bad.  What's under rated IMHO is the run course, it's up/down all the time
the bike couse has one downhill where you can't use your momentium to the next hill

I still say being a clyde that a hilly course is actually in your favor, if you work on hills in training, but the downhills you can pass everyone, and use your momentum to get up the next hill. there are many races where I passed people pedeling while I coasted (recovered)_ going downhill

pick a course with good downhills to recover at a higher speed and a flat run course

I hear, and am hoping, that White Lake in North Carolina is a great first time HIM.  Water's clear and flat, hills don't exist.  It's supposed to be flat and fast.  I'll let you know after the first week in May '10

I meant Longhorn.  I was reading about Lonestar and my fingers went with that.  Apologies...

I did IM 70.3 New Orleans and the South Carolina Half this year - both were good for first-timers and Clydesdales.  Also heard 70.3 Augusta was good, as many on this thread have already indicated.

I chose 70.3 NOLA as my first so my wife and I could go to a neat city and have some fun around the event.  Make it more of a long weekend vacation experience.  It didn't disappoint!  April in NOLA can be a wildcard for the heat, though, so a bit less ideal for the CLY athlete.

Good luck!

Cheers,
Mark

Miami Man in Miami in November is dead flat. Great, friendly course.
Decent location, wetsuite legal, but not needed in freshwater lake.
November.
Good race.

I will second (or third) the vote for New Orleans 70.3

It is really flat and even though it had some growing pains it's first year I think they will iron those out this year.

The race finishes in front of St.Louis cathedral and Jackson Square which is in the french quarter so the finish line for the last 1/4 mile is lined with people.

BTW, I had cages and not clipless pedals for the race and I got called out by AbbieR in her race review. She said "who has a felt and cages"?  It's a small world you never know when the Triathlete you are talking about is a member of BT. ;-)

I am signed up for Racine (close to home), but would love to do Steelhead if it wasn't so close.  I am considering doing the Muncie aquabike.  I don't think doing 2 half marathons for my first races of those distance would be good 1-2 weeks apart.

I have heard from friends all three are fairly flat, with fast swims (Steelhead swim goes with the current)

I was going to do White Lake because I heard it's flat but signed up for Charleston SC instead. I believe it's the first year. Someone please tell me Charleston is going to be flat.

I've just signed up for my first 1/2 -- Vermont. I've never found anyone who's done it so I have no idea how it will be.

Congrats!  I signed up for Savageman.  Go heavy or go home is my weightlifting workout... I may as well translate that to the tri-world too.  Laughing

Anyone done the Patriot 1/2 in Williamsburg Va. Am going to do it in 2010 and was wondering about the "brackish" water in the James??? Supposed to be flat bike and swim but I have no salt water swim experience.
