I plan to ask Santa for one of these to improve my bike split. I'm a fairly strong cyclist but am always trying to get faster. I like the idea that the computrainer has a return policy if you don't have a noticable improvement in you speed/power. Cost is not a factor, but I was wondering which of these toys should give me the best performance increase

I'd vote for the PM.  That way you have a TOOL that you can use both in training AND racing.  The computrainer is sure nice and very tempting but even if you did ALL of your training on it you still need to race outside (yes I know that people get a FEEL for x wattage....).  Besides the computrainer "only" adds the video to the PM for your trainer---the PM will work just fine on a trainer or out on the real road....

Power meter. I bought the CT and then added a power tap and have since sold the CT. I wanted the wattage for outside riding.

I have both a power meter and a CT. Power meter gets my vote. You can use it on a trainer and outdoors, but learn everything you can about training and racing with power otherwise it is just an expensive speedometer.

Neither or both. Your performance increase potential is the same with or without a powermeter... as long as you are doing appropriate training. Both the PM and the CT can provide motivation to ride when it is lacking and in that sense both will help. The CT can provide video fun as well which can provide more motivation still.

But in the end you have to do the work no matter which gadget you get.

If you can afford it, get both. I've had a PM for 2 years now and am buying a CT this winter for a few reasons, but if I could only have one, it would definately be the PM.

First choice PM... awesome training tool and makes it easier to keep focus on the trainer (which, frankly, is about as exciting as watching paint dry...).

Second choice, CT... with the indoor season being close to 6 months in Sweden, those CT's get lots of use (we have two, one for me and one for my wife, great training together).

I have both...PM three years and CT 6 months.

I'd get both and do what Suzanne,  suggests learn to use it correctly so you get the benefit of it otherwise it will be an expensive bike computer.

Thanks for the advise. I used the search feature and it appears your opinions haven't changed. I will ask for the power meter and continue watching the Spivevals although I wish I could change the music.(I'm getting sick of the 70s Porn movie music)

Neither unless you do the work. Both are data collectors with different features but it si what you do with that data that can enable you to train more efficiently hence improving in a shorter period of time.

Depending what power meter you are considering my answer will change; if it is an SRM, Quarq or Power Tap then the power meter. If it is an iBike or Polar then the CT.

** If you are considering an SRM let me know, our head coach is a distributor...

I would get a PM.

however, if you want both, buy used and you can probably get both for cost of one new.....

CT is built like a tank.....

iBike (does not equal sign) power meter.
