LOVE IT!!!!!!!

(1) Do you think, as endurance athletes, we crave it more than "regular" people? My wife & I have weekly cheat dates where we'll eat a meal w/noththing but crap in it & let me tell you, NO ONE in the restaurant is enjoying their triple-bacon-cheesburger like I am. I don't know, could it be b/c it's a genuine treat or could my body just be craving the most amount of calories possible in one sit-in after a 13 mile run?

(2) Mini pole: Who's an emotional eater!? GUILTY!!!!

I am an addict when it comes to any chicken fried, or nachos. I don't think I crave it more because I train and workout, but I do sometimes keep myself from eating is as much because I know to be somewhat healthy I can't eat it for breakfast, lunch and dinner. Plus, I think a lot of people choose this sport or some other endurance sports as a means of getting themselves in shape. So, they probably were really into junk food before they started training. Thats my case kinda.

I see you are in Burke, I'm in Fairfax.  Where is good chicken fried anything here??? I love it!

I would think in training I crave it less when I'm in the "being healthy/training" mentality but I could go for some 5 guys burgers and fries

But there's a day, in the midst of intense training, when my craving is overwhelming. (Damn! Now I gotta hit 5 guys on the way home!)

Well there are clearly two sides to this, as you mentioned: if there's a craving is it because we're restricting our diet to keep things clean; is it because the level of exercise, the type of exercise, whatever, is causing these cravings; or some combination?

I think for the most part it's because of the restrictions.  Your body will be craving food of any kind after exercising, it's just looking for calories.  But I think when you're actively eliminating certain foods from the diet that's when you really start craving said food.

I used to do the real strict diet prescribed to weight lifters: tons and tons of eggs, salmon, chicken, etc; tons of brown rice, squash, yams, etc; 1 serving of fruit or vegetable in each meal; 7 meals a day; no sugar, no processed foods, period.  I'd go a month, day in day out, eating my exact diet, never varying even for a stick of gum.  Then one day I'd just go nuts, binge like you wouldn't believe--liter of ice cream for breakfast, 8 pancakes with maple syrup for lunch, candy and candy bars throughout the day, Honey Nut Cherrios or Capt'n Crunch at some point, pizza and wings at night, more ice cream for dessert...glorious.

Anyway, after years of that (3, to be exact) I realized that I wasn't turning into Arnold despite these restrictions, and after switching to tri training decided that the exercise plus three things would keep me happy and healthy: eating healthy most of the time, keeping things in moderation, and listening to my body.  Unless you're dangerously overweight I wouldn't worry too much about a few meals a week that aren't perfect--or even good, for that matter--just stick to a general formula (good complex carbs, lean protein, watch the sugars and processed foods) and listen to your body: when you're hungry then eat; when you're starving you probably should have eaten an hour ago; when you're craving some ice cream then eat some ice cream (unless it's like the 5th night in a row. Then tell your body to give it a rest!)

Junk food: Coffee ice cream, coffee shakes, Reeses Whippits, fudgicles...not sure I could make it through life without these four

All I need to shut down those cravings is a look at a "before" photo from 75 lbs. ago.

I don't eat much junk food anymore (no burgers, no pizza, no ice cream) and don't miss it.  IM training certainly didn't have an impact on that one way or the other.

I crave junk food terribly.  I eat "healthy" 5 times a day.  When night time munchies come, out come the chips and salsa, combos, kettle corn, beer, cheese, etc.

I thought, WTF, I train hard, I deserve it.

When I as training for my fall marathon, I ate everything in sight.  Over the course of a year, I packed on 10lbs (all in my gut) while running 1000+ miles and tri training for 9 months.

Since new years, I have gone on South Beach diet to try and kick "the habit" and try to remember how to eat healthy again.  Weight is mostly gone but god do I want chips and salsa again...I deserve it!

Nothing better than Five Guys!

I know that when I run over 40mpw, I crave salty fries.  Especially after a 20 mile run.

^^^I think this is what my entirely-too-long post was supposed to say.

Also: Chinese food.  Once a week, sometimes twice.  That and ice cream are my kryptonite--General Gau, you make for a tasty, tasty meal.

I've noticed the only two things I really crave are Cherry Coke and Chipotle. I try to limit myself to Chipotle once a week, it gets expensive. I would eat there 7 days a week if I could!

I know that when I run over 40mpw, I crave salty fries.  Especially after a 20 mile run.

It took me about a year to lose about 30lbs of Five Guys food. I have about 10lbs to go! It was one of the most convenient places within walking distance of my work to eat for the longest time. They recently put in a Panera bread so that helps. I would eat at Five Guys 5 days a week. One for each guy. They need to calm down with the fries! There is no need to fill the whole bag especially after eating handfuls of peanuts while waiting for my double bacon cheeseburger. I had what I called a 'Five Guys couch" in my office that I would go into a food coma on for a half hour or so after consuming about 2000 greasing calories.

Typing this post just made me realize how much of a slob I was. Wow!

I don't crave it too often.....but when I do....I don't fight the urge.  But my junk food is not "fast" food.  I want fried seafood, rice and gravy, boudin & cracklins, fried sausage and a host of other local favorites.  Sometime you just have to go get a Judice Inn burger with a fried egg on in, a bag of Zapp's and a large "leaded" coke.

Mmmmmm....Zapp's-any flavor, hard to beat.

i have a weakness for Oreos and Nerds - - once I start I have a hard time stopping.  Of course, it's easy when you eat them all.

Pardon... but after a 16+ mile run, I just can't consider Chipotle to be junk food! Those chicken burritos are to die for. (Best thing about running w/my wife is that I get to also eat her remaining half!)

I bonked on a long run (longest to that point) and started imagining a friendly family stopping to see if I was okay and offering me a Rice Krispie Treat. A few days later I had to make some. The craving just wouldn't go away.

I'm not restrictive on my diet, it was just that we don't have Rice Krispies or marshmellows around the house.

The funny thing about all of this tri stuff: I've gone from a terribly restrictive, clean, healthy diet and probably 30 lbs. overweight (when seriously weight lifting) to a pretty open, healthy-ish but a good chunk unhealthy/tasty/awesome and I'm at 6% b.f. and more healthy than ever.

Weird how that happens, huh?

Ahh, the General.  That's a great cheat meal.

In all seriousness, there is some science behind an OCCASIONAL cheat meal being a good thing.

So what do you all eat when you're not eating Chipotle or Chinese food? Is there something else out there?
