Expert  1461    Sarnia, Ontario |  Subject: MUSKOKA 70.3 - Official Ontario ThreadThere seems to be lots of us planning on doing this race so I thought I would start an 'official' tread... Its going to be my first HIM and I have the lofty goal of surviving!!! Booked a room at Deerhurst already. They have rooms available and the rates were not that bad, a little over 200 a night for a suite with a kitchenette. |

Regardless going to to the crse just to see what we are in for,,,,happy, painful training. |

I'm doing Lisa Bentley's training camp in June, so I thought I'd decide after that if I think it's doable without the dying part! I'd love to stay at the resort, but I've already spent my allowance. Friends of ours have a cottage about 10 minutes from Deerhurst, so I'm staying there, and I'll just drive to the airstrip on race morning. Good luck! It's my first half iron...what about you guys? |

My wife quite liked that she could have a nice hot tub at the resort while I was out on the bike portion of the race. A bit drier would be nice this year, but either way this is a great event. |

Your going to find quite the difference between our southern ontario roads and those hilly ones in Muskoka. None the less its a great race, and I recommend riding the course once before if you can swing it. see you in Brights Grove. FishHog |

It just made it so easy for everyone .. The only problem was the three night minimum.. I also did the Bike course prior to the race I would also recommend doing that too.. You really have no idea how many hills there are untill you actually do it.. To top it off the bike course is actually 95K(just what you need) It's a great event and I would be doing it again myself if I wasn't Doing IMcanada in August... Enjoy the day !!  |

I did the Parry Sound tri last year, and I have a pretty good idea what its like to be not prepared. I am going to do a few rides in the Gravehurst area and want to ride the Huntsville course in August. Any one interested in maybe doing a BT group ride in Huntsville this august? |

I would highly recommend visiting the race site and course before the race. I'm not going to do it this year. Work constraints so I can't do enough training. It is a beautiful area and you will like the course that is assuming it's not raining like the first year. Last year the weather was perfect. |

Already hitting the hills and wondering how I am going to make it through 94k of 'em! Anyway, we booked a training weekend up there in July and are taking advantage of the 'Ironman training rate' at Deehurst. We heard that Hidden Valley had even cheaper rooms if you said you were coming up for training but our friends wanted to do Deerhurst which is fine with me. Just a PSA to remind you to use the deal if you're heading up! Hope your training is going well!

I am so depressed, made an appointment for ART on monday. Guess my plan is going to become bike specific for the next 4 to 6 weeks. ugh. |

Yes, there are hills...many, many hills. BUT, they're all doable. Just when you think you can't make it, you're over. I really do recommend riding the course at least once. The first five kilometers are a bit nasty, and you think your heart rate won't ever come down, but suddenly you have some down hill and flat areas and it becomes a quite enjoyable ride. The run is challenging, but also really lovely. There's one rather daunting hill, but again, runnable. Once you reach the turn around, it becomes quite pleasant. I think it's going to be a really good time. I've adjusted my goal after doing the course, and now I really just want to have fun and finish as strong as possible. |

This is my first year of Tri's and have completed 5 races this year so far, some sprints and olympic distance stuff. I have finished well in all the races this year and just want to have fun and finish the race in Muskoka. I have now changed my training and geared it for HIM. I plan to head up in the end of July and ride the bike course and check things out. I wish everyone luck and fun in their training/preparation for this great race! |

The 'lollypop stick' is one of the tougher sections and because it is what it is that means we have to do it twice. As a training ride I was just hoping to get through about 25kph which I did. Though coming back to th resort I was wondering how I would ever find the legs to run a half marathon after that! For anyone who is going up, I would recommend going on a quieter day or time of day - the 35 and 117 aren't super heavy traffic but it's very fast - the road has an 80kph speed limit and i would guess that people do much more than that. We picked the day that seemed to have the lightest winds and coolest temps for days we were up there. Oh and the water is very brisk! brrr! |
