Looking for someone to swim at Siesta beach. Been swimming at the Y but not yet in the ocean. It's a little intimidating, would like to have a partner who is doing sprint tri's. Maybe even some beach run too.

I am actually going to be down in that area this weekend and could probably be persuaded to do a swim/run.

I am up for a run on Siesta but the water is in the sixties right now. Still too cold for me since I don't have a wet suit. Let me know what day/time you will be at Siesta.....

Yeah I really want to practice in the ocean but way too cold right now so I am training at the Y. I am waiting until it hits 70's. Hopefully soon. Than maybe we can meet up for a swim...

Anybody interested in a OWS this Saturday at Siesta Key beach?  I just want to try it out before the race on the 15th.

Did a short swim there Sunday afternoon.  Not sure of the exact water temperature but it was very comfortable.  No wetsuit needed.  Little choppy this afternoon because of the wind.  My guess is that early in the morning it would have been a bit smoother.  I did ask the lifeguards about currents.  Didn't get what I would consider a "confident" answer but they said the current runs north to south (and it did feel a bit tougher swimming north).  Hope this helps.  Good luck with the race next weekend.

Sounds good.  I am hoping the water over on the west coast is a little calmer than over here.  I've been swimming in 4-7 foot swells all year so far!  Can't wait for this weekend.  Thanks again!

The water is currently between 750-800F.   Generally, it's pretty calm in the mornings; the swells usually pickup during the day, but shouldn't be bad unless there's a storm front coming through.  Maybe 2'-3' swells.  We don't get surf like they do on the east coast.  The current is definitely north to south on Siesta Key.

Good luck to everyone racing this weekend.  Hope to see some of you there.  I'll be volunteering, but don't have my assignment yet.

Observations from my workout today at Siesta Key:

Swim - at 2PM swells were 2/2.5 feet moving southwest to northeast.  Water temp was very comfortable.  Visibility was poor due to surf.  Did not notice a prevailing current.  Lifeguard I spoke to said water has been rougher in the morning and calmer in the afternoon the last few days.  Hopefully that will change by Saturday morning.

Bike - distance from exiting the Gulf to exiting T1 is about 1/4 of a mile, most of that is across powder soft sand.  Parking lot is fairly rough/old asphalt.  U-turn at 4.6 miles is on a regular two lane road, no cul-de-sac, will have to slow down a lot to make that turn.  Mile 8 has some bike lane that was recently repaired.  Small bridge is right at the 10 mile mark.  Once over the bridge there is a left, right, left series of 90 degree turns.

Run - starts on grass, shell, and sand before getting to the sidewalk.  Could be an interesting run for those in early waves because the run is on a narrow sidewalk that transitions right into the bike lane.  Within about 7 feet you will have runners going in both directions and bikes heading south.  Could make passing difficult.  Finish is on the grass so soft landings for those that crash at the end.

Hope this helps those competing this weekend.  Also, if you get there and realize you forgot something, there is a 7-Eleven about 2 miles south of the transition area that had a decent supply of Clif Bars, Powerbars and sports drinks.

I'm panicing a little bit. I might just be the last person out of the water on the sprint. Hoping my first tri isn't a total disaster.

I swam this morning around 8 am.  Small swells, not too bad.  Definitely harder right to left (facing the gulf), maybe just due to the waves.  It looked better further out.

Good luck!

Karibu - 2010-05-14 11:12 AM I am coming to watch Saturday, can anyone help me out with directions from I 75? Where exactly does the race start? I cannot find an address.

Simplest:  Get off I-75 at Clark Rd.  Stay on Clark.  It will eventually curve to the left and become Stickney Point Rd.  Stay on Stickney Point past 301/Tamiami Trail and over the draw bridge to Siesta Key.  Turn right (north) at the light and head up the key.  You will come to a light with a "Y" intersection. (a fire station will be on the left).  Stay left on Beach Rd.  The public beach parking lot will be a couple of hundred yards on the left,  just past the tennis courts.   Turn left into the lot and park.  The Transition area is on the grassy area behind the tennis courts.

HTH,

Mark

karibu, it's 948 Beach Rd. I'm coming from the north so heading south on 175, taking exit 205 to merge onto Clark Rd/FL-72 W. Con't to follow FL-72, turn right at Midnight Pass Rd., continue on to Beach Rd. Sharp left to stay on Beach Rd. for about 292 ft until you see 948 Beach Rd.

I've never been there. Got the directions directly from the race website.

Hope that helps.

Redcorvette, those are even better directions b/c of the details. Thank you. Sounds like you are very familiar with that area.

Exit at 205, Clark Rd, go west
(Just before US 41, the name changes to Stickney Point Rd.)
After US41 you go over the drawbridge, (you are now on Siesta Key), turn right at the stop light (T-intersection).  This is the 1st point since I-75 where you can't go straight.
Continue about 1.5 miles.  There is another stop light where traffice can veer right or continue straight - go straight.
In about .25 miles the beach is on you left.

You can google Siesta Beach, Siesta Key, FL and it gives the correct location.
