Trixie, you and I are the only ones who have not swam across Trout Lake. Are you ready? We'll do it together...OK

Ummm not sure I'm ready for that my first time there this year!!

jplotzke - 2010-05-05 9:24 PM Do you mind if I join you all tomorrow for a swim?  Where do you all meet (What lake do you swim in?)  Are you planning on wearing anything more than a wetsuit (hood, booties? -- this is going to be cold!  haha)

Thanks!

Jeff

Jeff,

It'd be great to have you join us! We will all meet in the Kent Lake parking lot. It's the first one on the left if you come in straight from the entrance. Most folks park to the immediate right in the lot. We shouldn't be hard to miss. We'll leave the parking lot around 5:30 for the short walk (10 min) to Trout Lake.

I'll just be wearing my wetsuit. I don't have gloves or booties. I'll probably bring two swim caps for that extra layer. It's going to be chilly....but we'll all be in it together.

I'm not sure I'll swim all the way across.  I have a sleeveless wetsuit, and I'm not sure my arms will handle the cold for that long.  I may just splash around in the shallow end of the "pool".

I am not so sure on the swimming tonight for me - the training plan isn't calling for OWS until the 20th, so NEXT week I am in, OK?   It is just a tad too chilly for this girl.

I will be doing 2-3 loops of riding - see you all out there somewhere.

If any other crazies are going to be out there at 5:30, I'll join you.  I've got someone to watch Sarah, so I have no excuse now other than its going to be freaking cold!

Jenniferlyn, DO IT.  Training plans are mere suggestions, and if you can fit something into it, you should, because you know the weather will be bad this weekend and you wont get one of your workouts in!

I will be there at 5:30, ready to swim.  I am rolling with the sleeveless wetsuit, 2 caps, no booties etc.

I might be down for an OWS this week.  I really need to practice and I have a few more open Thursdays before work starts.
What lake do you guys swim in?I know where Kent Lake/Kensington Metropark is but I can't locate Trout Lake on google maps.
What is the distance of the swim?

I might be down for a bike before or after too!

carl,

trout lake is at ilra (island lake recreation area - state park across 96 and connected to kensington) and is about 700 yards across so about 1,400 total. the water was chilly but fine once you got warmed up and through with pulling out the collar on your wetsuit and letting a little water in!

you need a state park sticker...the metropark tag for kensington doesn't work.

Ok.  Googlemaps just doesn't have anything labeled for Trout Lake.  A few posts back someone said something about parking at Kent Lake and walking to Trout.  Is this a regular occurrence?  That appeals to me since I don't have a state park sticker but I get to reap the metropark benefits as an employee.

we park at the kent lake parking lot in ilra and walk along a trail to trout lake. you could, however, park at kensingon and ride your bike through the tunnel over to ilra. i'll see if i can pull all of this up on a map for you.

I guess I could pony up the cash for a state park pass.

Michigan DNR website says the pass costs $10.  Is this the truth?  That's a whole lot more affordable than the metropark season pass.

Cool thanks.  I looked at the recreational passport website and it is rather confusing regarding the entry cost.  I guess I'll find out when I get there.

Carl,

The pass cost me $25 too, so I think that's the going rate. It's well worth the cash as you can get in a lot of swims and bikes over the summer.

We meet in the parking lot every Thursday and start the walk to Trout by 5:30 PM. The walk takes about 10-15 minutes, then we suit up and dive in. The group then usually bikes around ILRA and maybe Kennsington after the swim.

Once the summer kicks in there will probably be some of us doing the swim/bike on Saturday mornings too. Just stay tuned to the forum for updates. But Thursday is happening. We had 11 folks out this week and the number will just increase as the weather warms up.

See you next Thursday!
