Who currently runs with back and knee pain?

Are you currently trying to do something about it, or are you just plugging in mile after mile of painful running?

I have both. Rehabbing and ACL reconstruction from last May, something is still damaged in the knee. So no running for me. I also have muscle spasms in my back lately. I'm doing lots of stretching.

I do swim pretty often and bike a little. I wouldn't run through knee pain, go see a sports doc and find out what is causing it.

Well... currently, I'm not in *too* much pain. After my long run on Saturday, my IT band was tight, causing pain in the outer part of my knee. I know it's not associated with the meniscus or knee cap or anything like that, just because of the location. I rolled out my quads, IT band and other stuff using trigger point. After 2 days of rolling, the pain went away. But yes, I'm going to a sports dr tomorrow, to try to nail down why my hips are off all of the time at the chiropractor. I don't want to constantly roll muscles and stretch too tight of muscles, it seems like a band-aid to what the real problem is (which I believe, in my case, is bad form over 3 years of running, causing muscle imbalances).

I have had both.  I started going to a chiropractor, and that helped take the edge off.  I think running with better posture and getting a stronger core has helped more than anything.  So, I didn't check anything b/c there wasn't a "I used to" box.  =)

Then you would check "no"

I put down no pain, but that's because I'm doing something. I have a surgically repaired meniscus and a bulging disc in the C5-C6 area. Years ago I changed my running style to midfoot and that essentially resolved the knee pain from the meniscus. I also do some light weights to strengthen my neck and upper back area for the bulging disc problem. I don't get much pain from it, but I'll get a dull ache and some numbness when I don't stay vigilant with the minor strength program.

Just the knee. Normally, it hurts all the time. Since right now I am exceptionally INACTIVE, it really doesn't  bug me too much. I am sure once I get off crutches and back to moving around, it will resume its normal status. :p

I have a little bit of both from time to time.  If ankle or knee hurts, I ice regularly and take ibprophen until it stops.  If the back hurts, I use the heating pad and ibprophen until it stops.  Nothing very serious.

sometimes I have back pain but over the past several months I have developed knee pain.  First my right knee and now with the left.  I'm 49 and have been running pretty consistantly since I was 24.  I did scale back on running mileage back when I turn 40 because I was seeing more and more of my old running buddies retiring their running shoes because of some sort of injury.  I love to run and figured if I cut back I might extend my running life.

Anyway, last week I finally went to an orthopedic and found out I have arthritis on my knees.  basically the cartlidge is gone and I am bone to bone.  He gave me some options and I might have some fluid injections in my knee joints but before I do I am going to make a visit to the chiropractor.

Interesting, in all my years of running the one compaint I heard the most from other runner's was knee pain.  I never once had to deal with knee pain until now.  And it appears that's the injury that most likely is going to close the chapter on running for me...

That's awful. I hope you find success with how your planning on dealing with this injury. If going to a chiropractor, make sure he's a good one (don't ask me how).

if you are doing something about it... it's helping

if you are doing something about it... it's not helping

I've had my right knee reconstructed twice (ACL torn both times and meniscus damage the last time) and it's never really healed 'right'.  It does that ache thing with the weather changes, and after long runs it's just a constant throbbing.

I've also broken my back twice, once in the lumbar region which has also given me nerve damage into my legs, and once in the thoracic.

For my knee, it's a lot of RICE, listening to my body, and knowing when I can push it and when to ease off.  For my back, I've found that hot yoga and stretching has helped a LOT.

Have you had an MRI, full xrays (standing WB, sunrise, etc.), and a scope? It's really difficult to truly diagnose the level of damage without going in and looking... and there are a LOT of options available to you.

Do you still have your meniscii? If you do (but maybe you don't, since you said your were bone on bone...?), and your lesions are full-thickness, look into something like microfracture or OATS or the like. Alternatively, you could look into something like an osteotomy, if you have a larger lesion (and it is unilateral...if you have lesioins in bothe the medial and lateral compartments, then might be more difficult).

Osteotomy would still be an option even if you lack your meniscus and other options like cartilage transplants/restoration/plugs are off the table.

If your lesions are patellar (and non-wb), there are even more things to try.

The trick now is to catch it and work on it now.

Lumbar fusions already and really bad knees.

However recently started running and my knees are feeling best they have in years. I do believe some supporting muscles/ligaments are strengthening.

Back always hurts..... missed a week of training because of it last week.

I had some knee pain because I amped my running mileage too quickly.  I lessoned the mileage by quite a bit recently, and I just finished a pain-free run.  I hope that I can keep the pain away with a smarter and more patient training plan.

I'm a hot mess from a joint perspective. I have a lot of flexibility but not a lot of strength. I've gotten a lot stronger in the past few months, but my right knee will still give me trouble. Sometimes it's my IT band and sometimes it's just general pain. It has gotten a bit better since I cut back on treadmill time and got fitted for proper running shoes.
