Pre-race routine:

Flew into Boston late on Friday - into the rain! Checked into the hotel, went looking for food. Found some good lobster at McCormick & Schmidt, wore the bib and all! Saturday morning went to the expo, shopped until the credit card smoked!Jeff left and rented a bike - Cervelo! - and rode in the rain and cold. I took a nap, and stressed about the race. I do that well. Had a drink with some TRIbe friends from home, and then met friends for a great dinner at Via Matta. Yum! Who knew you can't bring wine to a restaurant in Mass? I flew that darn bottle cross-country. Sunday we went to a Red sox game - they got creamed, but it was fun. Especially for a Giants fan! Great seats, fun day. Call from eldest son, he broke a school record in the 50 free! Dinner at a friend's house - salmon, pasta....great pre-race dinner!
Event warmup:

Got up early-then had to bang on the door of the concierge lounge to get them to open on time. Was not the only racer doing this!! Walked down to the busses - about a mile. Geez, it was cold. Good thing I bought gloves with the aforementioned smokin' cc. Kissed hubby goodbye, made new friends on the bus! Got stuck in the back - and a bit seasick. yuk. Made it to the Athlete Village - wow. SO many focused, happy, excited, cold people! Looked for BT people, specifically MAX, couldn't find anyone. Stood in the porta-potty line 3 times, just to be sure! Saw the fly-by, dropped my clothes at the sweatbag bus-brrrr. Time to walk to the corral. NOW the butterflies are here!!! Swing by one more porta-potty. Crammed into the corral - number 20. Made some more new friends! Everyone was friendly. Without warning, we're off! Like a herd of snails.

Comments:

What an amazing experience. More people than I could have imagined every running with - my BQ race, my only other marathon, didn't even have 2000. It makes for a very different run, and so much more fun!

After all of my pre-race porta stops, I couldn't believe it, but I had to pee, and it wasn't gonna wait. Overhydrated, a bit?!? Made it about mile 4. Lost a couple minutes, but felt so much better! I was holding my pace at 8:40s, and thinking that this wasn't that hard. Mile 8, I had to go again. This was getting ridiculous. Couple more minutes. That, however, did it. Whew. mile 9, I was feeling it in my quads. hmm. Slow it down a bit, stop thinking about banking time. Still can't get over the excitement in the air! You slow down, people yell at you to go! Runners and specatators! At the halfway point, I'm still on target. The Wellesley girls were great, lots of fun. Start looking for Jeff at mile 15, and I gotta say, that kept me going. Wasn't gonna let him see me walk! Saw him at 17, yelling his head off in a bright orange shirt - awesome. Legs are dragging, but that was a boost and a half. If he'd been closer I woulda kissed him AND handed off my race belt. C'est la Vie! Some very nice lady in a pocahontas shirt grabbed my hand when I started to walk up Heartbreak....wouldn't let me do it. Bless her! my legs are dragging at this point, big time. I'm way off pace, I know by mile 22 there's no way I'm breaking 4 hours. Bummer. Not gonna re-qual to race it with Jeff. The last 4 miles are tough....back to my comment on hills. Lots of little ones!

Turned the last corner, and there's Jeff again! And he's made new buddies that are also cheering me on!! Woohoo! I'm gonna finish (kinda)strong!

I just ran Boston. wow.
What would you do differently?:

Not get injured, no shots in the back, train more on rollers, DRINK LESS WATER!!!
Post race
Warm down:

Walked forever to get blanket, tape, water, medals, lunch bag.....met Jeff at the 'B' sign, he had roses for me! Awwww...

Long walk back to the hotel - over 2 miles. Jeff ran me an ice bath brr. Wandered out and around, had a great dinner at Sail Loft. yummm! Back to the room to pack, early flight out Tuesday morning. Lots of us on the plane waring race jackets!

What limited your ability to perform faster:

Back injury, for sure. The led to a really big decrease in training. Over-hydration, led to a really long time in porta-potties!

Event comments:

Truly an experience of a lifetime. WOW.

Linda,  AWESOME job!  I am sooo envious.  Perhaps if I ever get my own injuries under control I'll try and qualify.  San Antonio RNR is FLAT if you want to try Nov 16th!  I work for Marriott and will get you put up!

Congrats on a great race.

Thanks, Kelly - VERY tempting!!  We usually stay Marriott!  Problem with the date is Boston may be closed - it closed SO early this year!

Excellent race report...Jeff sounds like an great sherpa...I can't imagine you actually seeing him twice amongst the sea of spectators!

Guess you'll have to wear that orange shirt for him next year!    Unless of course...
