DETROIT (AP) — A 51-year-old woman who was hospitalized in critical condition after collapsing during the Detroit Free Press Marathon has shown a big improvement.

The Detroit News and Detroit Free Press say the first-time marathoner from Rochester collapsed about 7:50 a.m. Sunday near the Ambassador Bridge at mile marker two.

Executive race director Rich Harshbarger says the woman wasn't breathing and had no pulse. He says bystanders gave CPR until paramedics arrived.

The unidentified woman was taken to Detroit Receiving Hospital, where spokeswoman Ruth Kremer told The Oakland Press of Pontiac on Monday that the patient was "sitting up in bed and talking with her family."

Last year, three men collapsed and died during the 13.1-mile half-marathon.

Oops I think I just re-distributed the above.  Please don't tell the AP.

Not sure who has any more recent updates.  We all sign the waiver, but it is scary when someone goes down.

Thanks for posting the link to the article on Ibuprofen.  I used to liberally use it for aches and pain - now I am much more judicious in how and when I use it.

Today I spoke with the Freep Marathon Medical Director and she said the woman went into full cardiac arrest. Thankfully bystanders performed CPR. The woman is doing well and wishes to remain anonymous. I am taking a CPR class ASAP.

Excellent idea, I think everyone should know how to do this.  I saw an article yesterday that the new method for certain types of patients is to just do chest compressions, as that will start circulating the oxygen already in the blood immediately.  I should take a class again to get an update on this.

Oh, and thanks for the update on the woman.  Glad she is on the mend and really glad she had a few angels running by her.
