Extreme Veteran 483 San Diego | Subject: RE: Oceanside 70.3 I would agree that it probably doesn't make that much of a difference on the rear. Go with the disc. The front is what can get away from you. There is one really sketchy area. It is the no-pass, 25 mph speed limit descent. The wind was whipping through there this year. I weigh about 175 and had a 90mm up front and was hanging on for dear life - very close to losing control (as was the rider behind me). Just be aware and take it easy on that one section and you will be fine, no matter what your wheel selection. |

The course really boils down to those three big spikes. Other than that it's a pretty "easy" HIM bike course. |

It's a matter of pacing on the front side, make sure you leave something for the climbs. |

The group I'm training with is curious about cut-off times related to when they will be starting. Any help on where to look would be appreciated. |

Extreme Veteran 483 San Diego | Subject: RE: Oceanside 70.3 I don't think it's very typical. In most triathlons the 30-34s go between the 25-29 and 35-39 waves. It's been like this the past two years at Oceanside, so they must have some logic behind it. Based on this, I would expect you to be in one of the last 3 waves (I think it's alphabetical by last name). But you never know...they might change it up this year? |

Extreme Veteran 557 Woodland Hills, CA | Subject: RE: Oceanside 70.3 You might by off by a week. I think a 20 week plan would start on the 13th. I'm either doing BT's 16 week intermediate or Matt Fitzgeralds Level 6 plan from his training guide book. I think I'm leaning toward the 20 week just because I haven't used the book before. I'm going to be starting up with a winter maintenance plan pretty soon that will either lead right into HIM train or allow me to take a week off before I start up. |

Extreme Veteran 483 San Diego | Subject: RE: Oceanside 70.3 I have a feeling I'll be all over the place with my training for Oside. I'm doing another HIM in mid-November and then a marathon in January. Come February, I'll be following the FIRST marathon plan and will try to fit in swimming and biking 2 to 3 times a week. |

Only done the course once in 07, so others will know better than me, but a friend told me before the first one that the steep part of Topanga Canyon between PCH and town was pretty close to the first big climb. I recall that was pretty accurate. The other two, just train some hills, from what I recall they didn't come close to forcing you out of the saddle or anything. |

Extreme Veteran 557 Woodland Hills, CA | Subject: RE: Oceanside 70.3 I've never had good luck with races that require me to workout over the holidays. I get two weeks off of work and spend at least one week back home in Chicago which is always freezing on Christmas so I tend to spend the week boozing away and enjoying chocolates. |

Unless you are a weak pansy on the bike. In that case, you will regard the long hill as undoable. I ended up walking part of the hill this year, but I won't next year. I am training for hills, plus I have a new bike. Plus, my bike guy told me that with my new wonderful bike (Look 576) that I was not allowed to walk any hills unless I had a bent frame and a broken collarbone. So, I guess I will be making it up the hill in 2011. |

Member 58 Long Beach, Ca | Subject: RE: Oceanside 70.3 For anyone who has done it before, it looks like they took away the soft sand portions of the run for this year. The tides look to be too high to allow room on the sand, so we get a small hill instead. Having done it both ways, I say this is a very good thing. "Serious" training starts is 4 weeks, best of luck to all. |
