I don't really want to pre ride it either.  It is total monster of a course.

I am reluctantly in...I registered for it (this is my second olympic distance) before I read the bike course reviews. I was thinking about pre-riding this weekend, too, but I'll be slow. I'm not much of a climber. If you want company and aren't too worried about pace, though, let me know...otherwise, I may just see you there.

I'm not doing the race - not really ready for a Oly run (or swim) - but if you are pre-riding it this weekend I'd like to join.

Anyone interested in riding the Griskus Bike Course Sunday June 13th in the afternoon, possibly 2ish?  This is the bike course for the Griskus Olympic distance triathlon the following week.  It is 25 miles long and pretty hilly.  If we are feeling sassy we can also run a loop of the run course.  Here is the link to the course and map.

Anybody checked the weather lately? I noticed it at work today...it's supposed to be nasty all weekend in Middlebury, 80s, muggy, and T-storms...

I'll agree with that, I just really want to get this one in. I'm wondering if I can make it out there after work tomorrow since it's supposed to be sunny. I may load up the bike and see how it looks tomorrow afternoon around 5 ish - it would be a shame not to meet you all before the race, though!

kaburns - do we run in the rain? I'm scared of biking on wet roads on hills like this...

I did the Griskus sprint (some of the same hills as the Oly) in pouring rain a few years ago and skidded out on the bike.  Its actually not a bad idea to ride the course in the rain just to get a feel for it.

Running the Griskus course in the rain is fun.  Its hilly double out and back and the rain seems to make it more tolerable.

if it rains for the oly the bike will be a nightmare/death trap.  Of course, nothing could be worse than IMLP 2 years ago (I didnt race it but it was like 50 and pouring the whole time)

Okay, okay. You were right about the New England weathermen...I didn't go out to Middlebury today, but I spent my long ride without a trace of the sunshine I was supposed to have. I'll be out there rain or shine on Sunday...where do you all meet?

Alright... 2 PM tomorrow (sunday) for the pre-ride.  There is a ballfield just past the park entrance on the left (or just before it if on teh right depending on which direction you are coming from) which is a good meet up spot.  Ride will be "rain or shine" unless there are T-storms.  Plan is to ride the course (perhaps a little more) and if we are feeling tough brick it up with a loop of the run course.  This is a very hilly and fairly technical course so I will print out a bunch of maps (I got lost pre-riding last year).  Ride will be no drop, if there is a big group we can always break up into groups.

Here is the link for directions...  http://www.patgriskustri.com/directions.htm  Recovery meal: corn dogs, cotton candy and root beer!

Looking forward to a great afternoon!

I emailed Jeff to ask what his thoughts on an ealier start were, but haven't heard back. My thought was start loop 1 at 1pm and pickup anyone who couldn't get there until 2pm for the second loop. It looks like the T-storms are going to move in around 3pm.

Since Jeff is the organizer, i don't want to confuse this, but i wanted to give everyone a heads up in case it was a possibility. I'm ready now, so i can go whenever i get the word.

Sounds like the bike course is pretty tough. Any thoughts on how it compares to Harriman?

Also, does anyone know if the race is spectator friendly?

Are you talking the Pat Griskus sprint or Oly?

I think someone has uploaded all of those bike routes onto BT...click on the "Routes" link at the top of the page and it'll take to the routes people have put up already. If you search for Pat Griskus, you'll see one of the runs and both the sprint and Oly bike. If you search for Harriman, you'll see the sprint bike and run. Once you select a route, it might be helpful to compare the elevation graphs to get an idea for how the climb is spread out.

As far as comparing both sprints, it looks like the Harriman bike is a 15 mile slow incline, fast downhill, awful climb, and then cruise to the end. It's an overall elevation gain of 1,398 feet. The Griskus sprint bike is a 10.5 mile downhill for the first few miles, and then you spend basically the rest of the route climbing. The overall elevation gain is only 627 feet.

On the other hand, the Griskus Oly is 24 miles with three major periods of climbing that last anywhere from two to four miles each, and then flat to the end with a gain of 1,732 feet.
