Hi. I´m a new triathlete training for next year´s Danskin triathlon to benefit the Breast Cancer Research Foundation. The race is usually in June, so I have a year to get ready. I´m fairly new to walking, running, and swimming, so I´m starting with a walk/run training plan for the first four months. I´m very excited about the race and look forward learning alot from the forum.

Welcome! Another Houstonian here. This site is good for finding information, inspiration, AND training buddies, when you're ready to jump in with other folks. And LOTS of us had to start with walk/run - be smart, listen to your body, and you will make your goal and more.

I am in Austin as well and I just begain training for a Sprint distance Tri in McKinney (north of Dallas) in early October. I am doing ok on the run and bike, but I have literally just started swimming about 1 month ago and it is tough. This site has already helped me out a ton...lots of good articles and tips.

I´m familiar with that area. Are there any routes in that area that you run or ride that you would recommend?

Good luck on the Tri in McKinney! I´m not a strong swimmer and haven´t started training yet. I´m trying to find a pool that´s close to where I live.

Thanks cristin. I had no idea that was a tri store in town. Thanks for mentioning it. I found their website and it looks like they have lots of events for triathletes for most of the year.

Do you know anything about the new Lifetime Fitness they are building up on Mpac and either Braker or Parmer? I see ads for it all the time and looks really nice. I am swimming at the "Y" and also taking lessons at Deep Eddy Pool every Tues./Thurs. The lessons have helped out a ton...

No, I haven´t heard anything about Lifetime Fitness. I wonder if they will have a pool. Which "Y" do you go to? The one in Cedar Park only has an outside pool and they said it´s mostly for children and families. I´ll check out Deep Eddy Pool. Thanks for the suggestion.

I go to the Town Lake "Y"....I believe Lifetime Fitness does/will have a pool...it really sounds too good to be true, but I have heard the one in North Dallas is amazing. Climbing wall, pool, full gym, and a full spa for $50/ month. I might google it and see what it's all about.

Welcome. Another Austinite here.

I'm a Y member and use the Town Lake and Northwest location. The Northwest one isn't easy to get a good swim workout in. The pool isn't very large and the almost always have 2 lanes of open swim and 2 lanes of lessons, which leaves only 2 for lap.

I started training last year and the first thing I did was to take a swim lesson. I went to Austin Tricyclist. They have private lessons in the endless pool in the back. Desiree Ficker actually gave me the lesson. I'm not sure if she's still doing it. I don't think she came from a lifelong swimming background, so I don't know how effective she'd be at really refining a stroke. But for initial technique and drills, it was good. They also have an underwater camera they can use during the lesson. If you do it, make getting the lesson recorded a requirement. When I went, it wasn't set up right. I should have told them to get back to me when it was. It would have been very helpful to have.

There are a couple of other folks from Austin on here as well.

Courtney-

Austin Tri Cyclist is the only pure tri store I know of in Austin. Very nice people there and some awesome stuff. It is on Barton Springs b/w Congress and Lamar. Jack and Adam's is cool as well...once again, very nice people there. I really wanted to by my road bike from them just b/c they were so nice, but they didn't have the manufacturer I was looking for.

sorry courtney...i haven't checked this thread in a while!  it's called austin tri cyclist.  the post above yours said it's on barton springs, so i'm sure it's the same one i went to.  they have unbelievable amounts of gear and training resources.  the woman that was working there was great, too, which we all know is like gold because bike shop people can be intimidating (at least i think so).  so happy shopping and sorry it took so long for me to get back to you!
