Hi -- I'm doing my first tri (Niantic Bay Sprint in CT) this August. Really want to try at least one OWS before then (wetsuit, etc). Any great spots within a relatively short distance of Manhattan that are good for the uninitiated? (I can always ZipCar it to further locales...

Thanks!

Brighton Beach. No zip car necessary, just bring a metrocard.

A few of us run (sand)/swim (ocean) from jetty to jetty in Long Beach for a great workout.

Check out: www.cibbows.org. It's a group that organizes swims off of Brighton Beach every weekend. Very friendly, you can either tag along, or go out on your own. I've only gone out once, but I'm going out with a friend this weekend.
