How do you know this current price is not a reduction from a previously higher price?

And do people what to negotiate the price of the burgers after the race?  I think $5 is too expensive, how about $3.

Just my $.02

Is it a burger that you licked, therefore nobody else would want it? In that case, I will gladly take $3 for it!

So far, my limited experience has me forming a rather low opinion of race photographers.

2 of the 3 events I ran either had no photography or extremely poorly promoted ones since I never saw or heard anything of pics.

The other one was the Hy-Vee race.  There were photographers out there with what appeared to be good equipment, but my pic selections available blows.  I have a couple of unflattering pics coming out of the water (not their fault), and one pic of my on the bike (decent.)

There were ZERO pics of my run, and a couple pics of someone else lumped in with mine.

It screams carelessness and laziness to me.  Careless because the 2 people in the pics obviously aren't the same guy, and laziness because they apparently ran home when the rain started.

This was a BIG race, with a LOT of first timers.  Which photo do you think most would be interested in? I can't answer for everyone, but I would think most would lean towards a good finish pic. Which many of us didn't even get as an option because the photographers weren't bothered to tough it out like the athletes.

I think if you want good pics at a reasonable price you have to bring your own photographer(s.)

The question asked in the subject is "am I being a jerk?"

No, but this guy is...

aquageek - 2010-06-23 9:22 AM For those of us that race a lot I suspect they make very little.  But, for the first timers who think doing a sprint is the be all and end all of their lives, this is probably easy money for the photogs.

To the original question:
Wow, $90!?  Who pays that?!

Wouldn't the photographer get like 10x more customers selling CD's for $20 each?  Who buys prints anymore?

Another question is why isn't a picture included in the race fee? The race I'm doing this weekend charged an arm and a leg to register.

I agree that this "seems" true...but if it were actually true, then you would also have to assume that all photographers hate money.

It happens that people get set on a particular business model and/or are resistant to change. Maybe this guy spent a lot of money on a nice printer.  Or he’s old school and doesn’t like or know how to use a CD burner.  Maybe he has lots of paper stock to unload, or somehow thinks that paper won’t get ripped off (re-posted online for free.)

I know plenty of people who flat out refuse to change with changing times.
Do you know anyone at all in their 40’s or 50’s who refuses to use text messages?
My dad lead the computer revolution with the IBM PC, but hates e-mail.
Some people simply can’t  or won’t keep up.

From another angle, have you ever looked at something and said “hey, what if we did it this way instead?” and realize that it’s the easiest idea in the world, that nobody else thought of up to that point? Happens all the time.

Maybe this person is a really good photographer and a really lousy businessman?

You did KC Tri and Topeka, right?

KC Tri pics are here: http://www.backprint.com/view_event.asp?PID=bp%18yG&EVENTID=64970

Topeka was 4 days ago so I'd hardly expect them to be posted yet, but you can be notified when photos are ready here: http://asiorders.com/view_event.asp?EVENTID=63412

I found both links by simply going to the race web site.

She can set any price she wants. (and clearly did).

If it were water in the desert (or a spare tube at an Ironman) that she were selling, she might even get whatever price she sets.

Otherwise, its the person holding the $$ that decides how much to spend.

I won't get into the details of our transaction.....but I've got 6 images headed my way.

Never hurts to ask.  And, if you do it nicely, you never know.

Seriously?  Seems like a 6 page thread that you started would be worthy of at least some minor details.

All I'm left to assume is it went down something like this:  "Here's what we can do for you.  Don't tell anyone else."  So you're keeping your side of the bargain.  Hmm...

It wasn't exactly what I wanted.  It wasn't exactly (read - the "package" I proposed was not on the std. menu) what she offered.  We came to an agreement.

Bottom line is.....ask for what YOU want.  ALL they can do is say "no".....or...."yes".

Lot's more from KC. Thanks! I do now remember seeing someone up on the dam, you can see I looked right at him.  Didn't notice the others though in the crowds.  Cool.

I agree that there are some people who are resistant to change.  No argument there.

But name me one professional photography company that sells digital copies on cd for $20.  This photographer that the OP mentions is not an isolated case.  It's how it is across the country, and likely the world.

Yes, I know many 40-50 year olds that refuse to text message.  And my grandparents have an HD tv, yet refuse to watch the HD channels.  But there are some 70 year olds that I know that text message, and some 80 year olds that are DEVELOPING new computer software.

Maybe it's time for a change...but if it were more profitable to sell digital copies for cheap, don't you think someone would be doing it by now.  Because they would be really popular among racers (I would buy them), and I'm sure that type of service would be requested by the RD to keep their racers happy.

I disagree with nothing you siad, mmrocker.

I'm wondering - in what book isĀ $0 is a better business model than $50.

Except that you are not her only prospect. If enough prospects are willign to pay her price, she'll do OK. As a business person, she'll need to test the price point to see where her maximum profit lies.
