So far, my limited experience has me forming a rather low opinion of race photographers. 2 of the 3 events I ran either had no photography or extremely poorly promoted ones since I never saw or heard anything of pics. The other one was the Hy-Vee race. There were photographers out there with what appeared to be good equipment, but my pic selections available blows. I have a couple of unflattering pics coming out of the water (not their fault), and one pic of my on the bike (decent.) There were ZERO pics of my run, and a couple pics of someone else lumped in with mine. It screams carelessness and laziness to me. Careless because the 2 people in the pics obviously aren't the same guy, and laziness because they apparently ran home when the rain started. This was a BIG race, with a LOT of first timers. Which photo do you think most would be interested in? I can't answer for everyone, but I would think most would lean towards a good finish pic. Which many of us didn't even get as an option because the photographers weren't bothered to tough it out like the athletes. I think if you want good pics at a reasonable price you have to bring your own photographer(s.) -eric |

The race I'm doing this weekend charged an arm and a leg to register. I agree that this "seems" true...but if it were actually true, then you would also have to assume that all photographers hate money. It happens that people get set on a particular business model and/or are resistant to change. Maybe this guy spent a lot of money on a nice printer. Or he’s old school and doesn’t like or know how to use a CD burner. Maybe he has lots of paper stock to unload, or somehow thinks that paper won’t get ripped off (re-posted online for free.) From another angle, have you ever looked at something and said “hey, what if we did it this way instead?” and realize that it’s the easiest idea in the world, that nobody else thought of up to that point? Happens all the time. Maybe this person is a really good photographer and a really lousy businessman? |

But name me one professional photography company that sells digital copies on cd for $20. This photographer that the OP mentions is not an isolated case. It's how it is across the country, and likely the world. Yes, I know many 40-50 year olds that refuse to text message. And my grandparents have an HD tv, yet refuse to watch the HD channels. But there are some 70 year olds that I know that text message, and some 80 year olds that are DEVELOPING new computer software. Maybe it's time for a change...but if it were more profitable to sell digital copies for cheap, don't you think someone would be doing it by now. Because they would be really popular among racers (I would buy them), and I'm sure that type of service would be requested by the RD to keep their racers happy. |
