Subject: The best of times, the worst of times...

I raced the Buffalo Springs Tri-Sprint this weekend in Lubbock, TX. Since I was doing the sprint instead of the half, I wanted to attempt my fastest race yet. I was going to go sockless, no wetsuit (only a 500m swim), and I was going to start with my Garmin on.

The WORST
Within 3 strokes on the swim, someone kicked my wrist and off went the Garmin. $400 floating (sinking) in the lake. I contemplated stopping to look for it but realized that futile. I then contemplated quitting because I was so frustrated. I kept hearing my wife, "you lost what!!!"

The BEST
But I kept going. My swim still stunk, but when I hit the bike (with no speedometer) I told myself to push as hard as I could. Same on the run. My time was 1:24 when I crossed the finish line. First in my age group and 13th over all. I'm still bummed about the watch, but worse things can happen. How ironic to lose a GPS.

The CONCLUSION
I emailed Garmin this morning asking if they could help me out one way or another. I will never swim in open water again with a Garmin on. Lesson learned. I also learned I'm faster than I think, I just have to believe in myself and my training. Finally, I've got to get better at swimming.

What lesson is that? That tying yourself to technology might not be a good thing? :D~

Congrats on a good race, sucks on the Garmin.

Bummer.  I never understood this; people will shave their legs, arms, etc. and put on a wetsuit or speedsuit to make them glide through the water, but then strap a laptop to their wrist.  I don't like racing with a watch or laptop.  I find it takes away from my concentration on the race itself.

What type of Garmin?  It may not have mattered that it was kicked off.  As far as I know Garmin does not make a product that works under water.  I have heard of people putting them under their swim caps in order to get readings on the swim, but you can still lose it that way too.

One of their models is waterproof so you can wear it through the swim, but I don't think it can track HR.

If it came off only 3 strokes into the swim, you bet your I would be out there with a snorkle after the race as long as it took to find it.  :D

Model: Garmin 310XT.  Waterproof, but does not really track movement well while swimming.

Snorkel: I looked and looked with googles, but the water is so murkey, you cannot see more than 2 feet.  It appears instead of getting a new set of single speed 29'er wheels for my mountain bike, I will be purchasing a new 310.

I have yet to receive a response from Garmin.  Which seems to by my luck in dealing with companies (teaser for upcoming post regarding 2XU).
