Total Time = 2h 30m 14s
Overall Rank = 45/444
Age Group = 30-34
Age Group Rank = 5/46
Pre-race routine:

Bagel, Banana, and a Cup of JOE!!! Along with a stop in restroom.
Event warmup:

Um.... I missed this part. Just watched the half iron go off, and chat it up with friends. I think the only warmup I did was pee in my wetsuit and make sure my goggles weren't leaking!
Swim
  • 28m 12s
  • 1500 yards
  • 01m 53s / 100 yards
Comments:

This was the worse swim I have had in a race EVER! Not sure why. It was pretty dang choppy, but I don't know what the issue was. I was staying right on course (rope line attched to buoy's). I never had to pick my head up to spot (yes to breath though :)!)....

What would you do differently?:

Not too sure what adjustments to make. I would say over the years my swimming has remained the most consitant.
Transition 1
  • 01m 10s
Comments:

This was fine.... 2nd fastest T1 in AG (Funny part was that this was faster than T2....)
What would you do differently?:

Nada
Bike
  • 1h 07m 11s
  • 24.85 miles
  • 22.19 mile/hr
Comments:

This was a solid effort for me. Please with the bike today. Pushed hard, and still maintained some left in the legs for the run (although pace wise it doesn't show!)
What would you do differently?:

Nada, Felt pretty good about the effort today!
Transition 2
  • 01m 20s
Comments:

I can blame Ryan for not putting the speed laces on my shoes, so I had to TIE my shoe laces.... the difference between 4,5, and 6th place (me) was less than a minute.... DANGIT!! ;)!!!!!

What would you do differently?:

Speed laces the day before instead of driving to the race site!!
Run
  • 52m 20s
  • 6.21 miles
  • 08m 26s  min/mile
Comments:

It is what is! I knew that this was not going to be my strong point of the day. Leaving to hit the run course I stopped to kiss the wife's belly and carry on my way. Got a few ewww's and ahhh's from the ground only to find out later that Ryan turned to Kim after that and say "Honey who was that guy!?"

I pushed to the best of my ability today and knew that a 50 minute 10k was out of reach due to the hernia acting up again. I can't and won't complain about this. However I would have like to have been sub 50 in my own mind. It just really sucks watching people pass you in your AG on the run, knowing you can't keep on there feet.
What would you do differently?:

I am pleased today. Gas felt good, legs felt good, nutrition was "ok" but all in all I expected this.
Post race
Warm down:

Sat in the lake then watched the 1/2 Iron finish.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

Hernia

Event comments:

This is a great race, great area, and fun event!

nice race Steve.  I can't believe the future brother in law is responsible for you not on the podium. Why wouldn't he put speed laces on your shoes?
Darn fast bike today!!

Good race! Those swim conditions were ROUGH, and you clearly nailed the bike. The run...eh... recovery time off after one hernia surgery and then suffering from another one three weeks before does not lend itself to fast run splits. You're obviously capable of taking at least 5 minutes off that time.

I'd just like to clarify one point for the record. I was able to successfully put one of your speedlaces on, while you were responsible for the other shoe. It's not my fault that you chose to re-use your speedlaces, and the frayed ends were impossible to thread through the little eyelet thingies. It was like pushing cauliflower through a drinking straw.

Yes, but he is also responsible for the fast bike split so I can't take that away from him!

Funny thing looking at your race photos - your expression is always the same.  Can't wait to meet you in person b/c I'll bet you look nothing like your race photos. (at least I hope I look nothing like mine).

Congrats on the race and good for you taking the time for the baby kiss!!

Nice race, Steve! You are setting the pace for us newbies on sticking with it through the run.  But, I guess a lesson here for us is to do your own shoe laces.....

How did your swim stack up compared to years past? Remember, swim course distances can vary so much, so don't beat yourself up over that. Super-duper smokin' fast bike!! Awesome! And good job hanging in there on the run. You knew what you were battling going in and you gave it what you could.

Love Ryan's analogy of cauliflower through a straw -- good writing, Ryan.

And what's this about future bro-in-law? Am I not understanding the twisted web you have weaved?

Congratulations on a great day. Sounds like it was lots of fun too. Especially love the belly-kiss!!

Well he has been dating my sister in law for the past 14 years (ok maybe 4 1/2), but we lost all hope of Ryan jumping on the band wagon!

Awesome job Birdy.  Sounds like if you were at full strength on the run you would have been on the podium.

Next time go barefoot and you won't have to worry about what kind of laces you have in your shoes!

Great race Steve. Liked the attention to detail like kissing your wife's belly. I would have had to run a lot farther on Sunday to kiss my wife's belly. She was at home but we did enjoy a beer when I finally got home.
