It's a when a series of events conspire against you.  Sorry to hear about your Dad but glad you are back on the bike and training again after your crash earlier.  Seems to be the season for crashes - one of my neighbours came off his bike last weekend and is now out of Escape from Alcatraz.

Stay positive for the next 10 days and you may yet be amazed by what might happen in Cambridge unless it is the same temperatures as on Tuesday afternoon when I rode the course.  Brutal.  Brutal.  Brutal.  Why does the Sirocco always come down Egypt Road ?!

I will be driving to the race on Sunday and was hoping for some feedback on parking.  How bad is it? Am I best off taking the shuttle?

an FYI from my friend who goes to Cambridge quite a bit since she has a house there.  Yikes, Rays too!!!:

We certainly must have been a sight to see from Great Marsh Park!

I think most of us have seen or bumped into the rays at some point during open-water swimming. They are non-aggressive but can travel in large herds in the shallows, so it's something to just keep in mind if you are swimming the course this week.

Here is some more information: http://www.chesapeakebay.net/bfg_cownose_ray.aspx?menuitem=14396

Hopefully on race day, they will clear out once the first waves of swimmers go past (i.e., the pros)!

I highly suggest you did what Michael did ...go to the first, or first/second buoy and return.  Unless something miraculous has changed the situation, there is a herd of rays in the shallows by the beach.  By herd, I mean 50+ rays you will have to travel through to get to the beach.  They were thrashing and jumping as we ran through them.  Actually Sam ran through the water (in a wetsuit) and them, pulling Jane and I, as we violently kicked.  They were flipping everywhere!  It was amazing, if not slightly horrifying (for me).

If you do go the "real" route please let me know if they are gone...or still there.

First race day forecast:

Temp 68 at start, 79 at 11 AM, 85 by 3 PM
Dew point 65 (so quite humid)
Winds 5-10 mph, starting out of the east but switching to the south. Hopefully, that will mean a
tailwind on the way back for once.
Partly cloudy skies
Chance of rain and thunderstorms in the afternoon.

Now the weather model I'm looking at is flip-flopping a bit here as a stationary front is overtop or real close to the area on Sat-Sun. So, if we're south of the front, more humid and southerly winds will prevail. If we're north, easterly winds and a bit drier conditions. Right now, it's saying the former as a low pressure system picks up the front a little as the low goes by to the north. But subject to change. Model's also calling for a bit of shower activity in the early morning and then a bit in the afternoon as well.

At present, the heat isn't forecast like last year but the humid conditions will still affect folks, especially on the run. Personally, I wouldn't mind a bit of rain on the run myself.

Water temp today - 79.3 And with hot conditions forecast in mid-week, it's really not looking like a wetsuit legal swim.

Look for a forecast update on Weds and possibly on Friday.

And in reply to turtlegirl - RAYS???? Man, I hope the pros clear those out before I go! I don't mind non aggressive sealife cuz I used to scuba dive but hitting them in packs is a bit different.

Those rays will be long gone by the time AGers get in the water. I dont see them hanging out long after the pros splash around.

Planning on a no wetsuit but maybe we'll get lucky.

I would love some rain on the run portion.  I love to run in the rain.

I'm getting excited about the idea of a non-wetsuit swim right now.  I like knowing before you get to the event.  One less thing to plan for or expect to be changed at the last minute.  Plus it'll spread out the field a bit.  That's a good thing on this course. Hope everyone put the proper time in at the pool this spring!

And along with that, here's my weather update (DanielG: a bit different numbers that I'm looking at, but not too much):

Overall, not much has changed. Saturday may actually be a bit cooler as the stationary front will be to the south and winds will be off the ocean. But, Sunday is still looking like the front going just to the north of the area and the race area gets into the warmer air. As the front will be in the vicinity, so will scattered showers and possibly thunderstorms. Timing of any rain/storms very unclear at this time. Latest model has an area of rain moving over the race site before the start and during the swim. Then just isolated/scattered areas of showers after that. So, too far out to get that down timing wise. But not looking like clear and sunny skies at present. Forecast details:

Temp: race start 72, 11 AM 79, 2 PM 82 (will feel like 85)
Dew point: 68 (HUMID!)
Winds light, generally out of the south at 5 mph but the winds can always be a bit squirelly here
Partly to Mostly Cloudy skies (so not looking like full sun at this time)
Precipitation chances 40% decreasing to 30% by afternoon

So it's really looking like other than a possible thunderstorm, the humidity is going to be the main factor of the day. Remember to stay hydrated!

Current water temp at the Cambridge water buoy: 78.8.

Unless something drastically changes, last weather update from me will be Friday sometime.

What happens happens. Its all out of our control. All we can control is a) how much fun we have b) our effort c) whether (or weather--pun intended) or not we allow the conditions to effect us. Since the predictions for storms are mostly for the afternoon I am not too concerned.

Well, for the most part, I agree with what you said (especially the rain part, though I'm always wary of thunderstorms). However, I think knowing what to expect weatherwise helps in your level of effort planning. So, knowing that it's going to be humid will allow you to adjust your hydration/nutrition/electrolyte needs before and during the race, especially the run. For instance, I'll probably have a small towel with me and wetted on the run so I can wipe the sweat off. And though the winds are forecast to be light, I'll be wary of them being stronger than forecast out of the south so I remind myself not mash going out and save a bit more for the tailwind coming back. I had to make adjustments like these during Eagleman 2008 when it was hot then. Wore different clothing than what I would normally to help keep me cooler and adjusted my run effort to deal with the heat accordingly. But I planned ahead of time. So I believe there are some adjustments you can plan to make for race day that are within your control if you know what weather might be coming your way. Helps make for a more enjoyable race, IMHO.

Folks don't seem to mind if I post the forecast and I've done so for my club and other races. It's also kinda a habit (as in I've been doing this for many years). Info's free. Use it or not.

Yeah the weather always gets into these discussions:

1. The camp that seems to care about it.
2. The camp that tries to tell everyone else not to care about it.

Truthfully it DOES affect how I will race and hydrate, but I won't really adjust until I read the forecast that am.

YMMV, but I have had some success in extreme heat here before.

Well, our long training days are over for this race, we're used to fretting about stuff. Dunno about anyone else but weather is one of the things that I just look at and plan around as a matter of habit and now it's an excellent thing that I can think about without the possibility of overthinking it as I might if I worried about wheel choices, tire choices, innertubes, did I pack that last packet of chamois cream, okay what else might I want and not have packed...

I'd rather chatter about how much it's gonna suck due to heat, rain, t-storms, hail, lightning, plague.

Anyone know if grabbing a couple rays and having them pull you through the swim course is considered illegal assistance?

The only way I see this race being wetsuit legal is if it snows about a foot on the swim course Saturday night.

Meh. At least it means I dont have to worry about packing the wetsuits.

Roger that

Latest forecast update and I probably won't post another unless something drastically changes as I'll be heading to the race site tomorrow morning:

Temp: race start 73, 10AM 79 (Heat Index 84), 1 PM 84 (Heat Index 90)
Dew point: 69 (HUMID!!)
Winds: SW 5-10 but shifting to the west by noon.
Slight chance of rain (17%) in the morning but increasing to 30% by noon and 40% by afternoon, along with increasing chances of showers and thunderstorms
Partly cloudy skies

So, while it won't be in the mid-90s to near 100 like last few days or in years past, it will still feel hot later and hydration/electrolyte intake will be especially important once again. Winds are also going to be a factor heading out for the early waves and possibly coming back for the same waves. Hopefully those same winds will provide a bit of relief on the run.

Current water temp is 81.5. Really looking like a no wetsuit swim.

GOOD LUCK to EVERYONE! Enjoy the day, no matter!

It's like bath water out there.

I like the weather forecasts but overall it doesn't change what I'll do.  It will be hot whether it's 85 or 90 :-)  I'll love every second of it.

Wish I could wear my wetsuit but it will be good for me not to.

Good luck everyone!!!
