Subject: High heart rate during training
I seem to have an unusually high heart rate during my training, especially my runs. According to the 220-age rule, my max heart rate should be 184. But that's about what I end up training at, especially during my runs. But I'm not running anaerobically - my breathing is easy enough to hold a conversation, and I can keep it up for a couple of hours ( marathon training as well as tri traning).

Is this something to worry about, or celebrate? Or is it just the way my body is, so adjust the HRM and keep going?

Generally speaking, 220-age is not the most accurate way to determine Max HR. 220-32 is 188, and I've seen HRs higher than that. Plus, the formula assumes that every 32 year old has a max of 188, which is not so.

Others know far more than I, but I would suggest you do some reading on Lactate threshold training, AT training, and real tests to determine your max HR, vs. using a formula that isn't necessarily accurate.

As mentioned, it may very well be that your maxHR is higher than the "rule" would suggest.  That said, that HR for everday training still seems quite high (suggests your maxHR is pretty close to 220!).  Are you sure you can hold a conversation at that pace?  What kind of HR do you get in a 10k race or somehing like that?

if you're a marathon runner, your LT heart rate probably has moved up because of your training. It might be worth it to work with your coach or have your LT defined.

My usual training rate is between 170-180, but that still puts my max heart rate between 212 and 222(!) Once I get up around 180, I can feel myself starting to really huff and puff. I'm really not training at a great speed, either - 9, 10 minute miles. I haven't worn the HRM during a race, so I'm not sure what my race HR is. Maybe I'll strap it on during the tri this weekend.

I just checked my resting heart rate as I'm typing this, and its about 63. I need to do some LT tests to see what's going on...

That formula is only accurate for about 60% of the population. I suggest you try the MHR test in the heart rate articles on this website.

Genetics have alot to do with your heart rate. It is more important to know what is normal for you and watch the trends. Here are some great articles on measuring your heart rates and using heart rate training effectively.
