While I'm in marathon shape I think it's time to try an ultra. I'd like to do one to see how I like it before switching back to tri training next year. I'd like to do one between Thanksgiving and Easter and hopefully somewhere near family and friends:
Seattle, Portland, San Francisco, Los Angeles, Honolulu, Oklahoma City, Houston, Indianapolis, Toledo, West Palm Beach, Memphis, and of course I'm in the Boston area...

If anyone has a suggestion for an ultra newb friendly race I'd appreciate it. I've been looking at

Huff 50k http://huff50k.blogspot.com/
Very close to inlaws, rough week for me to travel.

Peanut Island 6/12/24 hour race http://www.peanutisland24.com/
Very close to sister, not a trail race. 30-50 miles in a 1.2 mile circle could grow weary.

Hey, I did the Huff 50k last year.  It happened to be about 5 weeks after my first IM (Beach2Battleship)  which was also my first ever marathon.  So, I thought, "what the hell".  I found out what hell was by about mile 16 of this tough son of a of a trail run.

ps- it is a 33 mile run!~

I have done the fun run 1 loop of the Huff - they say this is the last year for it (at least in its current location) due to DNR closing the trails to foot traffic next year.  I liked this race a lot - again, I did the 1 loop fun run though.  Playing with the idea of going for 50K though.

I ran Huff last year and had a blast.  This was the 3rd marathon or longer for me in 10 weeks.  I did it with the idea of just finishing and getting my Marathon Maniac status.  We had about 30-32 *F with 4 inches of snow falling that day.  Traction was a bit of a challenge but it was well organized and fun.  3 loops with 3 aid stations on the loop so it was well supported.  The last aid station of the loop had hot chocolate and hot soup.
