And for the record, YES I AM WHINING!!!

Whinner...

U r right to pint out that the M 40-50 are in the back, even considering they;re probably the most competitive AG in the sport of tri (a bunch of men trying to prove we're not THAT old).  Last yr there were (I think) 4 x 40-44 waves - insane numbers, but if you just focus on your race it's the same as any one wave race. Here's the drill: Just chase, catch and (quickly) pass the person in front of you.  repeat 1,000 times.

Sure, its dangerous with all those people out there but maybe the city can't block all the roads the entire day and so the solution is to get some of the most competitive waves in the back (aka: slower waves in the front).  Clearly not focused on the athlete but perhaps the only way to guarantee the event keeps coming back - or did you miss what happened to the half iron championships?  GONE from Clearwater!

Bottomline, this is a great event.  Go out there and enjoy it.  And kick some while ur at it!-even if it's your own!

I'll be driving in from Largo race morning if anyone is staying nearby with family in a hotel or elsewhere and wants a ride into the event rather than make the family get up at 4 am.  I'm going to get there bright and early like usual, I'm thinking be there by 4:45(trying to avoid the rushSurprised).  If all goes well I have obtained a front row parking spot again this year next to the finsh line. I would hate to have to walk so far to transisiton, I don't want to get too winded too early, maybe i'll take a GU if I have to park too far away.

Anyways, let me know.  Might as well carpool.

I plan on getting there no later than 5:00 am but I was going to park at the pier. Now that I think of it, that's probably not a great idea because I think traffic won't be open when I'm ready to leave.

After the race, we're going to Oystercatchers for their magnificent brunch. Brunch includes Mimosas and Bloody Mary's - yum.

Kind of wish I'd just gone in the 0-39 Clydes group and see what happens.

x2 on this.  only reason i did go clyde and went ag (m35-39) was to go early and avoid the late morning heat.  guess they are trying to make up for those last year that got the shortened swim later in the morning by letting them swim early.

X3....I'm kicking myself now!

Yeajackson and I am in for that.  We don't fly back to NYC until Monday.  It will be nice not to "race" out after the race.

You won't regret it. You'll need to make reservations. To give you an idea of the quality of the brunch, to say nothing of the beautiful setting of the restaurant overlooking the bay:

At brunch, which is a splurge at $45 (but that includes flowing champagne and Bloody Marys), walk around the room and plan your attack.

Over there a woman gets a forearm workout stirring three different risottos at the pasta and risotto bar (one example: shrimp with roasted fennel and lemon thyme). A little farther along, men in white serve plates of just-shucked Eastern oysters, perfect shrimp cocktails, snow crab claw and salmon poke. Run the gantlet of cold salads (one with roasted hearts of palm; another a Thai shrimp salad zipped up with pickled ginger and marinated cukes; a balanced salad Nicoise), maybe stopping for a nibble at the make-your-own guacamole bar.

Stay focused. You've got the eggs Benedict station to think about, and that carver over there is slicing off rosy tenderloin with a dab of horseradish cream or a sweet-spicy pepper sauce.

Don't be hasty. There's still an array of sushi, seafood salads, muffins and pancakes, the list goes on. It's a cornucopia, but unlike a lot of brunches, attention has been paid to each offering as if it were being served individually.

I tried calling them to add you to our 12:30 reservation; no luck, it's lunch hour and busy, evidently.

They are on Open Table and I can see that there is a 12:45 opening for 2. I could book it for you or you could visit Open Table and do it yourself.

Just got the email newsletter.  Looking to be non-wetsuit:

  • WATER TEMPERATURE (PLEASE READ): Water temperature has slowly been on the rise and current reached the 80-81 degree mark.  Conditions are currently favorable for a non-wetsuit swim but be prepared for the possibility of a wetsuit swim as well.  Several factors can affect water temperature including wind and weather over the next week.  WETSUITS: 68 Degrees is the cut off for professionals, 78 degrees is the cut off for participants if they want to be eligible for awards.  NOTE: If the water temperature is above 78 degrees but below 82 degrees, athletes will have the option to wear wetsuits but they will not be eligible for age group awards.  Additionally, you will be required to start in the final wave(s) that will be designated as THE WETSUIT WAVE(S).  If you chose to wear a wetsuit in water above 78 degrees, you MUST start in the wetsuit wave or you will be disqualified.   There will be NO AWARDS for the wetsuit wave.  We will make announcements on Friday and Saturday at the EXPO with current water temperature readings.  A final water temperature reading will be made early race morning and we will be making announcements over the PA race morning with the final ruling on water temperature and wetsuits.  Be prepared for both non-wetsuit and wetsuit swim.

And if you do wear a wetsuit you will get to start behind the novice group or 10 am whichever comes last, lol.  I'm sure their sponser "wetsuit rentals" will be thrilled to hear this.

I think wetseuit rentals will be the ones doing the official testing of the water temperature.Surprised

Anyone staying at a hotel in the featersund area and needs a ride race morning let me know.  I'm taking a "paid voluntee day" from work Friday to shuttle athletes from TIA to their homestay.  How cool, I get paid to shuttle them.  Please don't let my work know I would of done this for free, hehe.

A mile swim is a mile swim but for those who have swam at Pass A Grille and SPA beach, what are your comments on the water? I'll admit I haven't swam SPA beach because I'm scared of that water haha. At PAG though I'll swim parallel to the shore (its clearer and feel safer ) but how would you compare PAG to swimming the course for the race? Hows the current? Choppier? I've been trying to work on my swim but for some reason I am still a little nervous about it because I haven't swam there yet.

Thanks in advance

Unlike the swim at Pass A Grille, you will swim straight out much further and into much deeper waters before making the left turn. You will *not* see clear water or the bottom after you are more than about knee deep.

The water conditions depend on the tide and wind. I've swam at Pier 60 (Clearwater) in much more shallow waters but when the wind was crazy and the sea was angry, my friend! You just never know. Well, you might have an idea if you followed tides and wind forecasts which I do not. I just show up prepared for the worst. The only thing I can guarantee you is that the water depth at Spa Beach will be much greater than a quick out and parallel swim, and you will have zero below surface visibility.

Best of luck to you!

Jeff and I will be going to Pier 60 on Sunday morning for a last OWS before the race. You are welcome to join us. We'll probably be there by 9am; let me know if you'd like to tag along for company and moral support.

Depending on the clarity that day there is a pipe that runs along the bottom after the first turn (it's only about 12-13' deep there).  You can use it as a lane marker for the second leg.

Last year, first leg (straight out) was choppy but not to bad, then and the cross leg things started to get a bit crazy, big chop but at least it was constant and predictable. A bit of current but not much. The last leg, going in, was a different story! Waves bounce on the wall next to transition and create these crazy dishwasher effect. You can not predict where the next wave will be coming from, so every time you get your face out of the water to breath is great adventure. Sometimes water will smak you right on the face so you have to relax and try to breath on your next stroke. Is when you already tried two or three times with no luck when things get "interesting".

Practice breathing on both sides, sighting and some "Tarzan" swimming comes handy sometimes as well.

The key thing is to stay relaxed, buoyancy in sea water is great, so no mater what, you are going to be on the surface, so just relax and go with the waves. It's actually a lot of fun!!!! Exhilarating!!

Two years ago it was not so much fun anymore and they had to cancel the swim, last year wasn't as bad, but still, they had to shorten the swim course for the last waves......

Should have mentioned ... if the water has big swells, do your sighting at the top of the swell, not at the bottom.

You may be doing a fair bit of bodygliding. The return is usually FAST and fun.
