Subject: Calorie Calculation question with food

I have a great understanding on nutrients, calories, etc in foods.

Understand something may say 1g fat, 4g carbs, 4g protein, and come out to 45 calories, because of rounding to whole numbers.

Recently I just bought this Healthy Grain Flatout Flatbread, which I love btw.

It states.

100 Calories
2.5g fat, 17g carbs, 9g protein

When you calculate those numbers out, it comes out to 126.5 Calories.  Now this does have 8g fiber as well.  The package states "8 Net Carbs*, 1g Sugar"

It says Net Carbs = Total Carbs - Dietary Fiber - Sugar Alcohol = 8 Carbs.

Is this normal for calculating calories from carbs?  Or just a marketing scheme?

1g Fat: 9 cal
1g Carb: 4 cal
1g Prot: 4 cal

Your favorite bread:

2.5g Fat * 9 = 22.5 cal
17g Carb - 8g (Fiber) * 4 = 36 cal
9g Prot * 4 = 36 cal

Total: 94.5...close enough to 100 to round up ;)

I understand how many calories are in fat, carbs, and protein.  My question is more for the Carb calculation area, when products have Fiber in them and Sugar Alcohol.  I know of some diets that subtract fiber from carbs for real carb calculation, but wasn't sure if that is a real world calculation or not.  Also I had never seen the subtraction of sugar alcohol before like the package mentioned.

Well after talking to more people about this, it does sound like you can subtract the fiber, so you can scratch this question Laughing
