Pre-race routine:

Arrived late due to family commitments and my needing to pick up my hammock at the UPS facility. We didn't arrive on site until 90 minutes before the race, and we still had to figure out where to park the camper, register, get our stuff, change clothes, etc., etc. Oh well!
Event warmup:

None. Just the rushing around to get ready in time.
Saw Amy and Tim at the swim start.
Entered the water with my husband and teammate, David Tri's, who was still insisting he didn't care at all about this race as he was wading into the freezing water.
Swim
  • 06m 2s
  • 273 yards
  • 02m 13s / 100 yards
Comments:

Water was really really cold, which I knew to expect, but it got in my ears and was painful.
What would you do differently?:

Wear earplugs. Figured that out in later races this weekend.
Also, I have a high number, so I started toward the end. Not sure if that was a factor.
Transition 1
  • 01m 36s
Comments:

Couldn't do the thing with the shoes because this is my road bike and my road shoes are not designed for quickly opening and closing the straps.
Came out of the water ahead of David, which was weird. I knew he would catch me on the bike.
What would you do differently?:

Transition is usually my favorite sport, but this was going to be a long weekend, so I didn't sweat it.
Bike
  • 14m 47s
  • 5 miles
  • 20.29 mile/hr
Comments:

It was a good chance to run through all the gears, make sure everything was working right, and get over any urge to panic on the descent.
Strangely, David never passed me, which I thought was very weird. As it turned out, he had some issue with getting into his shoes and had to get off his bike and deal with it.
What would you do differently?:

nothing
Transition 2
  • 01m 2s
Comments:

Eh, really didn't care too much in the grand scheme of things.
What would you do differently?:

nothing - I was taking it easy on purpose.
Run
  • 08m 33s
  • 1 miles
  • 08m 33s  min/mile
Comments:

David caught up to me right away and we ran together. We were keeping a brisk pace, and talking and saying hi to others we knew and saw on the course. We were trying to take it easy and be conservative, but it's hard the first night. Everyone was excited, and the field is mostly IM veterans, so the average pace was pretty high. We ran a sub-9 minute mile and were close to last on our run time.
What would you do differently?:

nothing
