tamason - 2012-06-26 10:20 AM CdA participants:  The bike profile on their website said/says 2,306 feet of gain.  Was that for just one loop or did it just feel that way because of the headwind?  Serious question because I wouldn't be surprised if it was for just one loop but I thought it was for both.

I believe that is one loop, I am pretty sure I read somewhere the overall climb was close to 5000'.

mark.evans - 2012-06-25 11:02 PM So sorry to let you all know that the person that was hurt on the swim passed today. it is sad that one of our own left us today this way. At least they passed doing something they loved. Pray for the family of this Ironman as they work there way thought all this.

Mark, I have read many reports that the person did not die, and that they are stable.  Here's hoping!

90% sure. My wife works as a CNA at the hospital and it came from workers there.

Thanks for confirming the climb was over 5,000' because it sure seemed like it to me!!!  It really reminded me of Canada that I did in 2010.  Well since Vicktor and Meredith also won that one as they did on Sunday at CdA it was interesting to compare their results for the two races:

total, swim, bike, run

Vicktor
Can    8:32:28    49:26    4:47:53    2:51:25
CdA    8:32:29    51:56    4:47:44    2:49:37

Meredith
Can    9:13:46    49:59    5:09:33    3:10:14
CdA    9:21:44    51:33    5:13:16    3:12:04

Check out Vicktor's finish and bike times!!

Congratulations to everyone out there on Sunday! It was a pleasure meeting some of you fellow BTers and seeing you out on the course. I didn't have the race I wanted due to my IT band locking up about 6 miles into the run but still got across the finish line. Hope you all enjoyed CDA and have safe journeys home. Me, I'm camping for a week and doing nothing!

I have no idea why WTC thought showing the elevation gain for ONE loop on the bike profile was a good idea when you have to do 2 to complete the course.  Showing only half the elevation gain is completely irrelevant and it would have been no more difficult for them to list the full gain.

I thought the 2,306 was for both loops until about 2 weeks ago.  That was not a fun surprise.

Same reason they said the  water temp. was in the low 60's at the athlete dinner. Theyjust don't want to scare folks off....But I am an Ironman and don't scare easy!

I don't understand how so many of you thought the elevation gain was for two loops. The profile showed 56 miles so it didn't even cross my mind that it would be for 112. Plus if you look at the Y axis (elevation) you could easily tell it was for one loop. It makes no sense to put the 112 mile elevation gain on a 56 mile graph. Maybe it's the engineer in me, but I thought the graph was fine.

Thanks but, I wouldn't go that far, you finished! Thanks, I will get it done next year, going to rework my training, especially my open water time. Guess I can start an official thread for the 2013 event next month if someone doesn't beat me to it.

Scott, I know you have done the old bike course and the new.....how would you compare the two of them....  not including the wind factor...  Really interested in your thoughts on the hills as well.   I did CDA 2007*2010*2011 and I am pondering 2013.  Also if you wouldnt mind expanding on the changes in the run course as well.

Thanks,

Travis

Maybe I'm reading it wrong, but the graph shows all 112 miles. The markings for the second loop are below the first loop.

Good for you - that takes some real mental toughness.  Best of luck to you in your training and your race next year.

The bike course is tougher in my opinion than the older course. I was always a bit confused when people kept saying how much faster it was going to be. It's really more long sustained climbs and then rollers throughout highway 95. The no passing zones tend to slow things down quite a bit too. As far as the wind goes it was really a mild day compared to the other days I'd ridden it. The run course is the same as 2011. It is harder than the 2010 course though.

OK Swim, a rookie hit me on the bike at mile 60 which added almost 45 minutes of bike repairs, first aid and getting checked out by a medic.  Was on so much pain that I walked almost all of the marathon. Ended up with a 14:18.

Loved the bike course, but I'm from Seattle and am used to hills.  The head wind was humbling out to the turn around, but awesome for the ride back.

Falling is one thing, getting taken out by someone when there is plenty of room to pass (and I had just passed him) sucks.

Outside of that, the experience of the race was more than I expected.  There was no way I was going to quit.

That really stinks. Glad you were able to continue on and things weren't more serious. I admire the fact that you didn't call it a day and pushed through the pain. Congrats on finish and the positive atttitude.

It was a little confusing....we debated this when it first came out. Then we look at the elevation gain on just the first couple of hills and figured out that it was only for one loop. Funny thing about the elevation chart, it says the max eleveation is 2749 but none of the hills even cross the 2700 ft line on the graph

Patrick, I tell us more about your race. It seems like you prepared for hills really well.

It looks like the swimmer pulled from the water did indeed pass away today. Condolences to the family. He was only 44. Sean Murphy from Seattle. http://m.cdapress.com/news/local_news/article_049477ac-c077-11e1-af...
