Racine, Wisconsin
United States
Total Time = 5h 59m 44s
Overall Rank = /
Age Group = M45-49
Age Group Rank = 73/191
Pre-race routine:

Got up at 4am, ate breakfast, walked the dog and headed to the site.
Swim
  • 37m 53s
  • 2112 yards
  • 01m 47s / 100 yards
Comments:

Easily the most comfortable OWS I think I have ever had. Swam a few times prior to the race and got comfortable with the new wetsuit.
Transition 1
  • 05m 57s
Comments:

Slow T1 because I had a difficult time putting my compression socks on over wet feet. Still havent found a quick way to make that work. I think I will go with the compression sleeves from now on.
Bike
  • 2h 43m
  • 56 miles
  • 20.61 mile/hr
Comments:

Good ride, felt comfortable the whole ride. Probably could have pushed a bit more to gain a little more speed.
Transition 2
  • 03m 11s
Comments:

This is where the problems began. Racked bike, bent down to tie my running shoes and felt like I got stabbed in the gut. Stomach cramps occurred each time I bent down to tie my shoes. Finally got them on and started out on the run.
Run
  • 2h 30m 1s
  • 13.1 miles
  • 11m 27s  min/mile
Comments:

Two words for ya: death march. I was so disappointed in this run. I had such high hopes and felt so awesome coming off the bike. This was the first time I have come off the bike on this race without leg cramps, but the stomach cramps continued throughout the run. Finally figured that I could run for a couple of minutes and when the cramps started I would walk for about 60 seconds until they subsided and then I could run again. Time included 3 rest room breaks.
Also, I have had my Nike's for awhile now. It is the first pair of motion controlled runing shoes I have ever had. They told me that I needed them because of my knee issues so I gave it a try. I have about 350 miles on them and I felt like I was running on bricks yesterday. Every stride was painful, especially on the left foot, the knees never hurt. I think I will go back to my Saucony's from now on.
What would you do differently?:

Gotta figure out this nutrition thing and what my stomach will allow.
Post race
Warm down:

Medical tent for a couple of ice bags and then to eat.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

Cramps

Event comments:

Organization was very good, volunteers were beyond excellent all day, I cant say enough good things about the volunteers the residents who came out to cheer.

Word for the city of Racine: FIX MAIN STREET! Its such a disappointment as a local resident for them to put on a race of this magnitude year after year and the city refuses to fix Main St. I launched no less than four water bottles yesterday on that street alone. It sure would be appropriate for IM to tell the city, "fix the street or we are taking our business elsewhere".

Nice race Mark! As a fellow Racine resident I couldn't agree more with the road issues, fix the roads or find a different route (which I thought there was a rumor about last year)

Great job on the race, especially pushing the run with those stomach cramps!

Totally agree with you on Main Street.  I lived in Racine 12 years ago and it's still the SAME!  Of course, there were a few other roads that could have been rehabbed as well.

Here's to next year for both of us!

Nice job.  You get that annoying little stomach/nutrition thing all figured out and you'll eat up the course next year!

Nice race and way to work through the stomach cramps!

Don't over-think it ..... The conditions were brutal on Sunday and most likely had a huge effect on your nutritional intake with your body.

So sorry about your stomach cramps...that day was hard enough without any extra pain to deal with.  Great job on gutting it out and finishing.  Congrats.

Nice job, Mark.  However, I don't think that they ever will fix that road.  Consider it part of the challenge to work on your bike handling skills.
