Fall Frenzy Triathlon
70F / 21C
Sunny
Total Time = 1h 18m 26s
Overall Rank = 74/184
Age Group = Clydesdale
Age Group Rank = 5/23
Pre-race routine:

Got to Parker about 5:45, set up my TA, picked up my packet, and stretched.
Event warmup:

Had to wait for about an hour to actually start swimming, as the waves ran long this morning. However, they had a nice warmup area available, and I was able to swim several hundred yards.
Swim
  • 12m 19s
  • 500 yards
  • 02m 28s / 100 yards
Comments:

I was worried about the lingering effects of my bronchitis. My first 200 was awesome, and much faster than I had thought possible.
Transition 1
  • 01m 23s
Comments:

Should've sat down to put my socks and shoes on...
Bike
  • 34m 15s
  • 12 miles
  • 21.02 mile/hr
Comments:

Other than one clown who drifted to the left, and almost crashed into me while passing him, my ride was excellent! Once I passed him, he tried to stay with me for a little while, about 20 yards back, but when I hit that one tough climb, I hopped out of the saddle and left him WAY behind! I passed a LOT of people, and had no one pass me! This is where I really started feeling that I was over the bronchitis.
What would you do differently?:

I broke my behind the seat water bottle carrier before the start of the race. Fortunately, I brought a gel, some water, and the other half of the carrier held my carb drink. My fuel plan worked well, though I should've drank LESS water and MORE carb drink. There were only 38 other guys faster than I...
Transition 2
  • 01m 21s
Comments:

I had forgotten my race belt, so I had to take a few moments to pin my number to my suit...
What would you do differently?:

Remember my race belt.
Run
  • 29m 9s
  • 3 miles
  • 09m 43s  min/mile
Comments:

Got passed by about 4 or 5 people, and passed one of them back near the end. This is where I felt physically much better than the last race (bronchitis), but I could tell that my fitness level had dropped off somewhat.
Post race
Warm down:

Drank plenty of water, walked and stretched. Took a short, light jog. Talked with Mark Dillard a little bit.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

I've lost some fitness due to my extended bronchitis, but overall I'm VERY pleased with this race.

Event comments:

I spent Sat night at Lynn's house, instead of make a LONG drive from my place on Sunday morning. I should've taken more time to pack and check everything before I left for Aurora on Sat.

Nice race Joe! And congratulations on your top 5, especially coming off bronchitis! When I was reading, I thought it said that you broke your behind in your seat on the bike and thought wow, if I broke a bone in my butt there's no way I'd be racing. Bronchitis, broken bones, is there anything he won't race through? Glad to see it was just your water bottle carrier.

Great job!  You are amazing!  I'm glad your bronchitis didn't bother you.  I know how tough that can be.  Way to stay with it.

Great Job. Sorry I didn't get to see you there. I kept looking for signs of BT's, but didn't know what I was looking for. Sounds like we had a good turn out. Keep up the good work.

Great race Joe!  Nice to meet you and congrats on the top 5 finish.  That should make the bronchitis more bearable!

Great, I just noticed Mark will be in my AG next year.

I guess I really need to pick up the pace.
