well i attempted my first iron distance race yesterday. started off in the water. swimmin was goin great minus the buoys all over the place. at about yard 1000 my wetsuit zipper came open from the bottom up. fillin my suit full of water. i had no way of getin it zipped back up or could take it off in the water. i tried to fight the swim for a little while just couldnt do it for the rest of the way. had a kayaker take me to shore where i took the walk of shame to transition and got my bike. i quit such a demoralizing feeling. after all year of training doing everything right. never thought it would end like this.

You need to sign up for another race today...others on the board have had strange things happen, I know one person who posts here who is an awesome swimmer actually DNF his first IM race in the swim due to some strange things, they then signed up for another race and rocked it...get back in the saddle.   You can do this!

That sucks, seriously sucks.

Move on.

It's not really about the race, it's much more about how you got there.

You'll line up again, and you'll have a better race then you would have had this time, that's how it works.

I am sorry to hear that. You did not quit, because you started, and then had what I call  a "life happens" moment; It is one of those things that you cannot control.  Do not let this define you. Sign up for another race.

That's racing.  I think that is part of what make this whole thing so appealing to me.  You train your heart out and hope for the best and roll the dice.

I'm sorry it happened but let it be something that shapes your focus, not define your efforts.

Hard to plan for that hang in there and better luck next season.  Note to self practice removing wetsuit in open water.

My heart hurts for you.  I DNF'd Ironman Canada in 2009 due to cramping on the bike.  I was devastated.  But, you just gotta pick yourself up and brush yourself off and definitely register for another race.  My hubby also DNF'd IMC the same year (sad house to say the least), but he registered for IMAZ that November and did awesome!

What really helped me was when another friend DNF'd a race a few months later and I found myself consoling her.  This was devastating for her but what I realized was that all the things I was saying to her, I really should have said to myself.  Think about that...what would you say to your best friend?  Heed your own advice.

This absolutely does not define you or who you are as an athlete.  You are entitled to feel crappy for awhile and then its time to start again.  Remember, if Ironman was easy, everyone would do it!

I am registered for IMC 2012 and plan to kick some serious butt this time!  You will too!

Hugs!

I agree with the rest , one race does not define you,

Whats the next race you want to do?

I'm doing IMC 2012, can't wait, but i have way more running swimming and biking to do first.

Good luck

That stinks! If you did the training and made toed the line, you are far ahead of most including me. Sounds like the next step is to get your zipper fixed and sign up for another.

Looking forward to see the next race report out!

So sorry to hear that - bad break and there's probably nothing you could have done. If you can swing it, try to put all your training to good use on a long course event near term. Great Floridian might be a possibility.

I'm with you bro, I DNF'd my first on the swim due to just crazy circumstance.  I was taken back to T1 by ambulance, which was fun.  I was devastated for quite a while, but decided to go back again, finished the race 7 months later.  My friend said that the race itself is almost more where you spend all that emotion you've been dealing with in training, rather than physical.

Signing up, doing all the training and getting to the start line is what IM is all about.  The journey, not the destination.  And it's not over.

Good luck

Most unfortunate....there are things that happen between the start and finish line that are unthinkable and by no means trainable...there is no "quit" epsecially in your case...you trained for the start line and what happened after you crossed the start was truely unthinkable and no way you could have planned/trained for it.

You cant buy that kind of experience and motivation.....stow it and use it in the very near future for your next IM.

I agree with all the sentiments...Raise those shoulders a little higher because you made it to the start, which is the biggest challenge.  Life happens!

Sign up for another right now and get back on the plan...It is the journey!  Really!

*hugs*
