Whitewater, Wisconsin
United States
50F / 10C
Precipitation
Total Time = 1h 12m 36s
Overall Rank = 11/106
Age Group = M 40-44
Age Group Rank = 4/14
Pre-race routine:

Got up early, cup of joe and Nutella bagel. Powerbar and water on the hour drive out. Got set up in the rain, moved to the end of a rack. Feeling pretty good about the day .... except the weather.
Event warmup:

Out for a 10 minute jog and some laps in the diving well that was 100+ degrees.
Swim
  • 07m 49s
  • 500 yards
  • 01m 34s / 100 yards
Comments:

Started as swimmer 3 in lane 3. Both the second swimmer and I caught the first swimmer by the 2nd lap. We had a full lap on him by the end of swim. Why do these people insist on lying on their swim times? I just stayed focused on staying within myself, staying long and counting laps.
What would you do differently?:

Nothing, easy swim.
Transition 1
  • 00m 43s
Comments:

Shoes clipped in, raining hard. Could not get my shoes tight because of the rain.
What would you do differently?:

Wear more neoprene in an attempt to stay dry?
Bike
  • 38m 10s
  • 14 miles
  • 22.01 mile/hr
Comments:

Decent ride, not my best, but decent. It was cold and I had decided earlier that I was not going with a jacket, arm warmers, nothing. I spiked the HR on the hill coming out of T1 and never let it recover. Wanted to ride at 230 watts and ended at 224 average. Just didn't feel like the legs were with me today. I just kept pushing, every time the LYC would drop I would just keep pushing. I think it actually started hailing a little around mile 10.

Avg = 224
NP = 240
VI = 1.07
TSS = 72.0
IF = 1.054

What would you do differently?:

I don't know what I could have done differently. It was wet and I made sure I wasn't going down but don't think I dialed it back anywhere on the course very much because of the road surfaces.
Transition 2
  • 00m 40s
Comments:

Decent T2. Learned that shoes full of rain water are hard to get on. No socks today.
What would you do differently?:

Cover my running shoes with something?
Run
  • 25m 7s
  • 3.2 miles
  • 07m 51s  min/mile
Comments:

I don't know about my run. I either need to use this race as further motivation to keep my running up all winter, or I just need to start only bike racing. I am so sick of coming off the bike towards the front and then getting passed by these guys running 6:xx minute miles. Frustrating!!! I mean really, I lost over 4 minutes to all three guys that placed ahead of me in my AG in a 5K, 4 minutes in a 20 to 25 minute run?

So, get into T2 and shoes were soaked and so was the course. Lots of mud on course and the 1/4 miles wood bridge was like a skating rink. Anyway, everybody got to run on the same course and it was tough. I ran the first mile right on planned pace and then tried to pick it up and found I had nothing left to push.

Couple of very tricky downhill wet grassy corners on the way home. Tried to push the last 1/4 mile with everything I had.
What would you do differently?:

Run, Run, Run.......

Hire some Angry Kenyan dude in an attempt to make me faster?

Take any suggestion that anybody makes about running abilities?

Just realize that a 7:xx minute mile is my overall max speed?
Post race
Warm down:

Got some food and went to get my stuff out of the rain. Got packed up and took a warm shower. Changed and went to check results. Saw my results, realized that my run killed me again and tucked my tail between my legs and drove home.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

Hmmmmmm ... maybe my run pace?

Event comments:

This is always a good race to test your year end fitness.

New Sprint PR and I improved my splits in this race in all three disciplines plus both transitions over last fall. Plan going into this race was 8 - 37 - 24. I went 7 - 38 -25. I think I am ready to Age up, maybe M45-49 will be easier on the ego .....

Dude!!! You are hard on yourself!!! PR!! Crappy conditions and crazy fast transition times!! What do you know about the guys who beat you?? Maybe they spent their college years running and only running. Maybe they aren't cycling or swimming near to their potential. Maybe they are just faster. Don't beat yourself up, please!! Celebrate all that you did today!!! When all is said and done, you are racing YOU! I think you did awesome. Congratulations!!!

Congrats on a good race!

I'll echo the others: don't be so hard on yourself.  You did great, set a new PR... you can't do much better than that.  Your bike effort looked to be spot on with your power.  Use the out season to build your run pace!  I have no doubt you'll be throwing down 7' miles at this time next year.

BTW, the guys in front of you look like quality runners; the second place guy does a 1:22 half and third place has a 19' 5k.

Great race Dino!!

I'd be happy with that 5k time at the end of a tri but if you're looking for any advice, could you back off just a bit in the last few minutes of your bike ride without losing much time?? Your bike was FAST so maybe that just sapped you too much for a fast run????

Dineen, you crushed the race and missed the podium by only one spot.  Don't beat yourself up over the run.  For now focus on that awesome swim (and you don't even have to swim in the winter dude) and that superb "held-back" bike speed.  Work on the run over the winter like RP said.....I have ideas if you want them.

In an effort to beat a dead horse let me pile on. Your own statement about the bike might explain your run: "Just didn't feel like the legs were with me today." That and the rain could explain the lost time on the run. Somedays you have it all some days you don't. Considering the result, you should be pleased with such a great result if that was an "off" day!

P.S. Right now I would kill for your run times!

way to blow up on the bike.

ha!  to further echo everyone.. try not to be so hard on yourself, pr, not so nice weather, hot chicks, etc...  clearly you're making awesome progress all around.  maybe call the minnow and let her get on her soap box and let her wave that finger in your face.  don't tell her i said this but sometimes it works. hold your head high brother, you done good and will continue to just get better.

Dino,

Congrats on the pr and the improved splits in all three areas.  I'm still just a newbie here, so I won't attempt to offer any advice.  If it helps, I was just happy to be able to run my race yesterday and not do any walking.  And, the woman who beat me didn't pass me until I was over a mile into the run.  Laughing

Dino, you're awesome. I can't top the comments above, so I'll just say x2 on all the best ones. What fun would this be if we didn't have something we felt we could improve? Congratulations on a great race and PRs across the board!!!
