Comments: Went out fast to get clear of some of the slower HS cross country kids who were lined up at the front, then settled down to 6:12-6:18, which was where I wanted to be. Hit the 1st mile at 6:25, though, so I knew a PR wasn't in the cards. Chased what ultimately proved to be the #2 O/A woman for a bit, then settled in next to the #5 woman for the last loop...ended up in a dead sprint with her for the line...I eased up and let her edge me across the finish. What would you do differently?: Didn't really do much of any specific training for this distance and lost two full weeks to the sprained foot. Probably would have had more gas in the second half of the race if I didn't chase a 19:30 that I knew I probably didn't have in me, but nothing ventured... Post race
Warm down: Jogged and stretched. Liz showed up right before I got my 1st place AG medal (and a nice surprise--$30 gift card for Sports Authority). I'd promised to pace her through her scheduled 10K time trial workout once all the walkers were off the course...did that run with her, making up a 9.4 mile day...good--if a bit unorthodox--Sunday long run. About 215 of 523 runners were HS cross country kids under 18. Among the adults in the race I was 17th of 303 (there were 5 runners with no age listed). Streak continues: No AG finishes off the podium at 5K/8K/10K since April 2009...second of those in a row with an AG win. What limited your ability to perform faster: See above. I always say that training predicts performance. I was staring at a likely 20:05-20:15 based on recent training...if I'd raced to that mark, I might have gotten it. By going out for a 19:30, I probably lost more time in the last two miles. First 5K over 20 min. since 2008. Some talk afterwards that the course might have been a bit long (certainly the times could be seen to indicate that), but I think it probably was pretty close to right on...not super easy, though, in spite of being dead flat: Lots of right angle turns, only some of which allowed for cutting. Event comments: Good event for a no-frills, first time, fundraising/memorial race. Runner who the race commemorates was a HS cross country runner, so his team and a lot of other area teams were out in force. Hand-timed race. Generally well-run for a largely family-driven event...lots of support in evidence from some of the local XC coaches. Nice medals and prizes for the podium finishers, but unusual age groups: Under 18, 18-35, 36-50, 51 and up. Last updated: 2011-10-09 12:00 AM

First 5K in about a year. Expected to be a small, first time, charity event in honor of a HS runner who was killed by a motorist during a practice last year...instead, 500+ runners and 1000 walkers turned up. Coming off sprained foot, training was limited...last interval workout suggested something just over 20 min. was to be expected, but my plan was to go out looking for a 19:30 (my PR is 19:49).
Got in a good half mile jog, stretched, then quite a few quality strides off the starting line. Have been dealing with an abdominal injury since January, so made sure I was feeling loose by the start.
