Pre-race routine:

Not Too much,Had something o eat and made the hour long trip down the Mountains from Perith. Was reall early but registered.
Set up Transition and watched the Enticer Race..

Had a banana a few hours out bu Im not sure it was enough food in the end...
Event warmup:

Too hot - mainly watching the race before and freaking out!
Swim
  • 11h 00m
  • 500 meters
  • 2h 12m / 100 meters
Comments:

So Im floating in deep water waiting for the race to start and the nerves are going...

but once the swim started I ws good - settled into the groove and was realy happy sitting in the lead group :)

I had some major issues navigating though and probably ended up swimming an extra 100m plus due to swimming in the wrong direction out wide instead of forward.

Still got out of the water with the lead group....I couldnt believe it! 500m in open water is just fine :) Not bad for my first race!
What would you do differently?:

Swim in open water before the race to learn navigation. The visability was so poor it was hard to follow feet because you couldnt see uch even right in front of you!
Transition 1
  • 00m
Comments:

Transition was a bit messy. Due to blisters when running I thought i would put on socks in T1 to save time later BUT this was a big mistake....I just coudnt get my feet dry so the socks were a nightmare, uncomfortable and stayed wet for the rest of the race.

Also getting my singlet on was a bit fiddly - no sticking or anything just uneccesary so will lookg t getting a proper tri top in future.

Apart from that got to the mount line a clipped in fist attempt! Woohoo! THat never happens so yay!
What would you do differently?:

Leave the socks for T2, get a tri top to make things faster
Bike
  • 45h 00m
  • 20 kms
  • 0.44 km/hr
Comments:

Towards the end of the course I started getting over taken by girls (mainly on aero bars thankfully so that made me feel ok!) but turns out some were a lap behind so I must have been flying.

Legs started going to turn into jelly, my hands go tingly and my sitting bits got really sore too...I might have pushed this too hard but overall I was done much quicker than expected
What would you do differently?:

Defiantley need to get the bike fit looked at and practice riding wet its really uncomfortable!
Transition 2
  • 00m
Comments:

t2 was so easy compared to T1!!!!

Everything went really smoothly and I guzzled some now very hot water on the way through but I dont think it was enough despite the aid station just around the corner.

The socks were still wet and ended up bunched up in my shoes which added to the discomfort later in the race
What would you do differently?:

Put socks on in t2 and not in T1
Run
  • 00m
  • 5 kms
  •  min/km
Comments:

So running is my worst leg by a long shot but nothing prepared me for thiss...

This was awful - about quarter way through the first lap my calves seized up and never came right which forced me to walk almost the entire run. Then got a nast dose of nausea and really felt hideous.

Stopped at every water fountain for a sip and got passed a lot. Kept walking and made it back to the aid station. Stopped and took on water as well as getting drenched with cold water - I was sick and crying it was not pretty but slowly felt better....

Decided I would regret not finishing and would walk on, especially since some people were just finishing the bike and heading out on the run I figured I might end up last but THIS WAS MY FIRST TRIATHON AND DAMN IT I WAS FINISHING NO MATTER WHAT!!!

So I kept walking with a few stumbled attempts at running but those cramps would not go away. There was a lot of support out there and I made sure to drink when I could and walk. It was hard being passed by so many girls but the support from spectators and racers was amazing.

When the grandstand came back in site I managed to stumble through nad across the line to finish.
What would you do differently?:

Bricks for the Jelly Legs. Take on a lot more water...investigate electrolytes etc for cramping and train in the heat.

To be honest at 37 degrees (celius) I think its amazing I finished!!!
Post race
Warm down:

Nothing I was forced by the people at the race to sit and take on a lot of water, electrolytes nad get my body temp down. Then hobbled to collect my race bag, my gear, bike and drink drink drink!

I was so burnt and had bad heat stroke so fluids and salty foods were what I wanted and what I got!!!

What limited your ability to perform faster:

1) The Heat - dehydration, sunscreen that obviosly didnt last the length og the race (thank goodness for sunnys nad a hat to help on the run)

2) A lack of training in the heat

3) Need more run training

Event comments:

The T-shirts said 'I swim, I bike, I run, I tri!' and you know what? Now I do!

My proudest moment is mentally being able to talk myself into finishing but doing it sensibly given the state I was in...the race director after the race stopped to talk to me as I think they saw me struggle (must have been keeping an eye on me). Made the point to say well done, these are the toughest conditions heat wise he has ever seen.

So you know what? Things are just getting better from here :)

Oh BTW - no splits for the race so all times are estimates based on my glimpses of the race clock and feed back after the race!

Congratulations, Triathlete!!!!

I am so proud of you, Cat!!!  I am so excited for you!  You finished despite some awful conditions, and for that, you ROCK!!!  I hope this experience doesn't make you think all triathlons will be this rough.  With experience, you will be one of those girls cheering everyone else on from the finish line.  Enjoy these next few days of rest and check in with me to let me know how you're holding up!

Well done!!!

You guts it out to finish your first Tri you should be very proud of yourself. Your first tri is always the hardest but it sounds like you've learnt heaps in readiness for the next one.

Congratulations Cat!

Its those kinds of situations that teach you so much about yourself. You had a tougher time than most, but you stuck with it. I hope you are truly proud of yourself.

You go girl!! As Yazz said "the only way is up"

Happy training and be careful in that heat.

Congratulations Triathlete!!!

Well done Cat apart from the run what a great race!! More Brick training and some cooler weather and you'll be flying.

Well done on actually finishing in 37C heat thats a killer.  I've also got to find some better suncream for racing too.  I got very very burnt at my tri on Thurs and I was wearing 30+ suncream.

I think you did an awesome job.  I'm so proud of you.

Awesome job Cat!

You must be so proud of you!  SUPER SUPER SUPER JOB!  I'm so glad for your swim and bike, sorry for the run.  But you did so well to finish!  I bet you feel like a billion bucks and probably everything you do for the next week will feel like a piece of cake.  Speaking of cake ... go eat some!  You deserve it!  Now maybe I can join the club!   YEA YOU!
