Age Group Rank = 1536/2879
Pre-race routine:

Woke up at 6am
2 eggs + 1 banana and bottle of Accelerade. Stayed in Crystal City so didn't have to get up too early - wife and kids slept in. Headed over to the race around 6:30, arrived about 6:50. Wandered around a bit trying to see if I recognized anyone, but no luck. Felt a bit cold (or I was still waking up) so waited till 7:10 or so to check my bag and lose the sweats.

Was supposed to run with my future brother in law, BUT, he called the night before and wimped out of the race. Oh well - will do this alone. Figure it will be a good prep test for my A race in May, the Columbia Triathlon.
Event warmup:

Warmed up with easy 10 minute run and stretches prior to start. Stretched a bit while waiting for a pre race release of fluids then headed for the start. Had a purple bib, all the way in the back. Worked my way to the front of the purple group.

Comments:

Never ran with so many people - next time will be nice to start further up now that I have an official time. Too much time trying to run through the mass of people - although feels good constantly passing people :-). Seemed to take a lot of work moving through the pack, never really spread out much except the brief hills (if you can call them that) Felt pretty good with performance, probably could have gone a bit harder at the beginning, the first 5 miles were a walk in the park. Downed a gel just after mile 6 getting ready for a strong finish. Really pushed the last three, almost as good as old high school cross country times :-) Won't be long before I can break that old high school PR of 18:36.

Last mile was really hard - legs were dead by the finish, but proud of doing it in under 90 minutes - 1:27:30, something to beat next time!

Overall placing doesn't seem right, spent over 5 minutes waiting to get to the start - oh well, doesn't really matter anyway - but official time is from start.

10 1:27:30 0:07:28 183 201 179 173 1

What would you do differently?:

Feel like a ran a good race. Hydration seemed right and followed my plan for the race.
Post race
Warm down:

Two bottles of water and a hammergel recovery drink. LOTS of walking back to the bus and some light stretching.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

Was conservative at the start, but allowed for a very strong finish.

Event comments:

Very good run - lots of volunteers - good event

Course: Pretty flat, couple easy hills - plenty to look at. With all the switchbacks, you could see nothing but people, as well as a few glimpses as the elite's screamed by - man do those guys fly... The trip across the Memorial Bridge was very cool, as well as down through scenic Rock Creek Park. Lots of fans out cheering the racers on.

You're five words over the 20 word limit ...

Seriously, nice race pace along some of the prettiest real estate in WDC.

Nice race, Brandon.  That was a huge race!  And you did it all by yourself!  You've gotta give your future b-i-l carp about bailing out.    Did you get to find tnt2tri?

Yeah, I don't think I've been in a run with this many people either - fun, but took 11 minutes to get to the starting mat!
