Subject: Sports Drinks that won't cause bloating
Now that my workouts are getting longer, I'm learning that I can't train with Gatorade- even watered down.  The same goes for Powerade.  They both make my stomach feel blah, and bloated.  I can handle them for shorter workouts, just not the longer ones.   I've also tried the Powerbar endurance drink mix- it's ok, not the best, but better than Gatorade or Powerade so far.  But that stuff gets really sweet tasting after awhile as well and makes me feel bloated.  I like how Endurox tastes after a workout and usually drink that as a recovery drink.  I was wondering if there's any advantage/disadvantage drinking this DURING a workout, besides the fact that it can get expensive.   I have thought about using Endurox during my training to try it but I'm not sure if has enough electrolytes- I'll have to check the container.  Any knowledge of this?  Or can you suggest some other sports drinks that won't cause as much bloating??  Thanks!

I'm just curious, but doesn't watering down your electrolyte drinks screw with their usefulness? It would seem to me that your bloating may be a symptom of hyponatremia? I'm sure one of our docs can speak up.

It's not completely watered down- there's still enough flavor but not as sweet.   That stuff no matter what dilution is just yucky for me.  For electrolytes I take gels- with water.  I have honestly thought of dithcing the sports drinks and just drinking water, and rely on gels or endurolytes for electrolytes.  I wonder if that would be a good thing or bad thing??

Janelle - Have you tried accelerade? I've had mixed results w/ it. I know it doesn't mix w/ gels but on it's own it doesn't give me any problems and it tastes pretty good. Still experimenting myself.

I used to drink Acce;erade when I rode.  I tried the orange flavor- and didn't mind it.  Although it seemed a little too thick and frothy for me.  It was ok for a sip or 2, but to drink it the entire time alternating with water was too much so I switched to Powerbar to try that.  I'm getting so frustrated becuase I am not yet to find the "pefect hydration mix".

I drink the Perform - Vitamin Water and Accelerade and like it.

The Vitamin Water has ZERO sodium...

I swim with Vitamin Water..

I used to drink Gatorade as my primary sports drink but more or less ran into similar problems. I've since switched to Cytomax and love the stuff. I have a fairly sensitive stomach and haven't had any problems with it. I think Powerade is nasty and didn't like Accelerade either. The only problem (as with most of the mixes) is that I don't think they make it in a single-serving packet so you have to drop the $$$ and hope it works for you.

I might try Cytomax.  Does anyone know if that's similiar to Endurox?  I have endurox now and will try that first.

I've drank amino vital in a 1/2 marathon and it seemed to work for me.  But then again I only drank a few sips at a time and probably didn't drink as much of it as I would on the bike.  So I might or might not have issues with it.

I guess finding the right sports drink is that same as fidning the right saddle or running shoe.  It's all trial and error- err.

I hear you Janelle. I'm trying to get used to gatorade cuz hats what they give out. I water my own down and I am leary of the accelerade for the long haul myself. I'm wondering if for my HIM I should go accelerade in my first bottle than go w/ the gaterade after that. I forsee trouble w/ that paln. FRUSTRATING you're right!

I used to use Cytomax. It is not similar to endurox as there is no protein in it. The only reason I stopped using it is that I didn't see a difference between it and the other sports drinks out there, and quite frankly it doesn't taste as good as gatorade.

Have you tried the new Gatorade Rain? Not as sweet. It's my fav Gatorade right now. Plus that chick volleyball player looks hot in the commercials

What if you try watering down the accelerade?  I'm in the same boat, still experimenting so I'm afraid I can't be much more help.

Hmmm...maybe I'll go back to Accelerade and try watering it down.  Would it be bad to drink a reovery drink like Endurox during a workout?  I mean, would that hurt anything?

I'm determined to find the right hydration for IM FL.  Looks like I have time to figure this one out.  I didn't really think it would be that hard to find a good sports drink/mix until I started back training this year.  Now it seems like nothing is working.

I use HEED for anything under 2 hours and perpetuem for longer stuff.

They are not sweet at all as they don't have any simple sugars.  Only maltodextrine.  The perpetuem also has added soy protein and a little fat.  Works great and I have yet to encounter stomach issues with it.

I use Hammer Nutrition's HEED for cycling and haven't had any problems with it. It has a pretty mild flavor. I like the Mandarin Orange but dont' care for the LemonLime. For longer workouts I like Hammer's Perpetuum - and I think it has some protien. It is kind of an aquired taste, but I find it is very gentle on my stomach. Also, it tastes better after I've been going for awhile and should be getting hungry.
I've even been making a paste of mixed Perpetuum and HEED in a flask for running. Again, kind of a weird taste but no stomach issues to date after weeks of messing with gels and cramps.
I'm not sure if I could drink it all day for an IM, though. But I am going to try it for a HIM this summer...
Good luck!

I've been using Hammer Sustained Energy mixed heavy for long bikes on the weekend and regular for 45 - 60 on the trainer (but I don't eat before hand), and switched from Cytomax to Endurox (Tangy Orange).  As above Endurox has protein, where Cytomax doesn't, and also 52g carb vs 20g (Cytomax) and 220 mg sodium vs 80mg sodium (Cytomax).  Most of the elite athletes I train around really like the Hammer nutrition products.

You're kinda in a tough spot, because what ends up happening is that you will come to rely on these other sports drinks that won't be carried at the race. This means you have to carry all of your liquids which can get a bit heavy (at least you lighten the load as you go) and pack some in your special needs bag, and then there is the marathon to consider. But if you can somehow get used to Gatorade, you only have to carry enough to get you to the next aid station.

if you go with sustained energy or perpetuem, you can mix it super concentrated so it's almost like a gel.  That way you can fit several hours worth in a single bottle.  For my marathon I'm going to carry two bottles.  One of perpetuem and one of hammer gel and just take water at the aid stops.  It's the same effect as carrying several bottles worth of premix with you.

I'll be curious to hear what works for you.

I don't think there is a huge difference between accelerade and endurox, but I don't have the bottles in front of me so I couldn't say what they are.  Endurox might have some extra "recovery" type ingredients.  Don't know if accelrade has more electrolytes or anything like that.  I know I was surprised the 1st time I mixed up accelerade at how thick it is.  I have a pretty sensitive stomach so I'm expecting to either have to water it down some or to have to drink a bit of water with it to water it down in my stomach.  Same thing with gu.  But I'm just starting my experimenting so I have yet to find out if/when/where the problems are.  So far my problems are usually stomach cramps/nausea though, not bloating.

Very true.  Those are some good points.  I'll have to check and see what's offered at gulf Coast and IM FL along the course.

Last night I ran for 2 hours and brough a bottle of watered down Gatorade with me because it was really hot and I'm a BIG sweatter.  Along my run course I stopped at the drinking fountains for water.  Only sipped on the Gatorade when I was thirsty and wasn't near a dirnking fountain.  Around 1.5 hours of my workout I ditched my Gatorade (I had 1/2 bottle left) and filled my bottle with water.  It wasn't a full sports bottle- I want to say my bottle was less than 20oz.  Maybe 16 oz bottle?  Anyways, I'm not sure if I'm drinking too much Gatorade that would cause my stomach to feel icky (full and bloated) and want to to only drink water, or it's jus the Gatorade in general.  But somehow, I need to figure out something.

runnergirl29,

Others have already posted on the subject but Hammer Nutrition makes some really good products that do not cause GI problems. I have been using HEED for 2 years and am beginning to go longer similiar to you. I now use Perpetuem for anything over an hour and have had no issues. Also, Hammer products can be mixed and matched so many ways it is incredible. Hope you find a solution!
