Maltodextrin packs from beer brewing distributors are cheap, and you can experiment with mixing your own endurance drinks. I havn't tried it , butit's on my list as I have about a dozen of these packets in my closet (along with about 20 cans of malted Hops extract)

Here's a recipe site, just substitue the maltodextrin for the table sugar:

Here's a link to cheap maltodextrin:

Finding a sports drink that works for your body is similar to finding a good bike saddle or running shoes as someone has mentioned. However, please keep in mind the following:

1. Sports drinks should not be watered down for the sake of diluting the electrolyte content, which can dilute the body's electrolytes, which can lead to hyponatremia.

2. Yes, one of the symptoms of hyponatremia is bloating so by watering down a drink, you are setting yourself up for developing hyponatremia.

3. Find a sports drink that you LIKE to drink and one that has carbohydrates and sodium and you will be on your way to staying hydrated.

Please, please, please don't water down your sports drinks. Hyponatremia can be deadly. I'd rather see you try other sports drinks since there are so many on the market rather than diluting.

Semantics...

In the original posters comment it seems that "bloating" is referring to GI distress & gas production due to being unable to digest & process the GU/Drink/Supplement

"Edema" is what can happen if you are hyponatremic due to excessive water intake without electrolyte intake. I don't think this is what the OP was describing.

Check this site out:

http://www.infinitnutrition.com/inf/servlet/inf

Infinit nutrition allows you to order ready made mixes like normal sports drinks but also lets you tinker with the formula to make your own.  You can complete a little questionaire about what length/intensity your workouts are (carbohydrate concentration), if you are a heavy/light sweater (electolyte blend), how much caffeine you normally drink, how strong you like the flavor....  Then they make you your own sports drink blend.  You can adjust any part of the mix in future orders and get it just right.

This is real popular with the folks on Slowtwitch.  I was always worried I would screw it up but I decided to try it last week.  Getting your original formula is really easy.  Unfortunately it hasn't been delivered yet so I'll be using my normal Cytomax/CarboPro mix.  Cytomax does come in single serving packets so you can try a bunch of flavors before buying a cannister.  I like the tropical fruit and cranberry-raspberry.

Here's a thread from Slowtwitch on Infinit.  http://forum.slowtwitch.com/gforum.cgi?post=772728;search_string=infinit;guest=7198039#772728
