Picked this beauty up for $10.  It's an old Raleigh Reliant 10 speed with lugged steel frame, 27" wheel and suntour drive train.  Anyway, here's the picks.  Can anyone guess where I'm going with this?  hint hint hint *ahem*picture 2*ahem*

Just looking at the rear dropouts on this makes me think if you are looking for a good project you could turn this into a fixed gear bike. I had an old 12 speed Myata from middleschool/highschool that I butchered down, stripped all the hardware and even the paint off & had a single speed fixed gear wheel built for the rear. This old bike now has a new life as my fun, around town, beater bike & it is a blast to ride!!

bingo.  that's the exact reason I bought it.  I'm stripping it clean, having the paint blasted off, doing a nice paint job (black) and switching it to a flip-flop fixed/free single speed.  I'm keeping it stripped down as much as I can and only putting bull bars on the front and maybe my clip ons once I get my tri bike.  I'm also going to lace my own wheels for it and do some crazy build pattern, like a 5 spoke crows foot

I didn't have the guts to try to lace my own wheel for it but I did the same thing. The wheel I bought had a fixed gear on one side & a single freewheeling gear on the other side. Don't spend the money for for a bullhorn handle bar just take a hack saw or buy a plumbers rotary pipe cutter for $5-$10 at the hardware store then take the current handle bars off flip them over & give them a cut. There is also some really nasty paint stripper that you can buy at the hardware store paint on the frame & it blisters the paint right off. All you have to do is clean it up with some steel wool & you are good to go. Last but not least keep both chainrings on the front because while you won't be able to shift any more, you may have enough leeway in that rear dropout that you may be able to use the same chain length for both chain rings. If you find that one gear ratio is not working for you ie too damn hard to peddle or too easy & your legs are spinning like an eggbeater you may be able to switch it to the other chainring.

Alright...now last but not least. I don't know what kind of clipless pedals you have but the SPD type pedals are great for this type of bike that way if you do use it for running short errands around town you are not slipping & skating around in your normal cycling shoes. Good luck with it. Matt

thanks for the info.   I just talked with the bike shop and they will build wheels for $35.  So I'm going to have the rear done there, to make sure I get proper dish and everthing and attempt the front myself.  If I screw it up, I'll bring it in.  I'm ditching the stock bottom bracket and cranks completely and going with a cheap modern version, probably tiagra or sora, mainly so the pedal holes are the right size for clipless pedals.  I think I'll go pureist and keep a single front chainring.  Hyper spinning and lugging up hills at 2RPM is just part of riding a fixie.  I also found a shop that will sandblast and paint the frame for $50, so I'm going to hack off the unused tubing lugs (aka all of them) and let them prep and paint it.

Subject: RE: vintage bike porn

Your telling me I could get $10 for my mom and dads old 1970ishs bikes?  Hot damn!  My dad is now always telling me that he will beat my riding my bike whenever I come home from school.  He has an old he says 60-61" frame Schwinn and a double crankset.  Probably enough rusts to kill someone.  to put it lightly the bike is older then me and I'm 22!  I can't wait till this summer to show him how much faster I am then that old bike.

Matt not a bad idea with the cleaning up and all.

Lemme know how the changes come, wouldnt be a bad fathers day gift if I could do the same.

I'm not sure yet.  I'm going to go out on a few road rides and not allow myself to shift to see what gear combo I want.  I think I'm going to run a slightly larger front ring and put a compact crank on just for clearence though.

As for the chrome...I'm still debating paint scheme.  I'm thinking about having the frame done in matte black with gloss black or maybe a dark silver perl on the lugs, then having all the shiny parts (including the fork tips) done in black chrome.  I found a place that sells modern 27" rims for pretty cheap, so I'm going to pick up new wheels and I'm trying to find a shop that can do twisted spoke lacing.

You found a shop that will strip AND paint it for $50? Sweet. It's at least $50 just to mediablast a frame where I live.

Don't you need a 30 or 40 hole hub for a 5-cross crows foot lace? I seem to recall that is have to be divisible by 10 for that to work properly.

This is a cool 36-spoke pattern:

for a 5 cross crow foot you do need a 40.  I found a place to buy undrilled sun rims, so I could do that.  I however like the 3 lead by 3 following like you pictured and am leaning towards that for the rear wheel.  I was talking to a guy at the bike shop about building up a set and he's going to give me the number of a friend of his in CO springs that might be able to do a twisted spoke build for the front wheel.  Something like this

If you are replacing both rims you can go with 700c.  If you are going to run a brake in front the pads can just be dropped a little and it'll work just fine. If you're not running brakes....it doesn't matter.

Fixed gearing is different from freewheel gearing. It's the downhills that get you if you gear too low. 42x16 or there abouts is pretty standard on the road. If you live where it's flat, you can probably go a bit higher.

yea, i just figured that out about wheel size.  I think I'm going to pick up a used modern canti front brake from a pawn shop or e-bay.  I plan on using a front brake only.  Since it is kind of hilly here, I'm going to run a smaller cog on the fixed side and a larger cog on the free-wheel side.

well i went on a training ride on my road bike to play with gear combos.  Both flat and hilly.  The 42-16 was the best all around combo I could find.  I'm almost tempted to do a 15 in the back, but it was a little much on the hills.  I figure I'll get more out of learning to spin 120 rpm then out of lugging up a hill at even lower rpm.

I think I'm revising my plan.  Instead of going with a flip-flop free wheel hub, I'm going to get a flip-flop fixed hub.  So it will be a fixie on either gear.  I'll use the 16 as my normal/hill gear but put on a 13 or 14 tooth on the other side, so I can bring it out to the local time trial from time to time just for fun.

Here in Maine, there is a vintage bike parade in July sponsored by Bicycle Coalition of Maine. It is for bikes pre-1980. Ugh, I cannot believe our old bikes are considered vintage now. My hubby has a 1979 Motobecane - it was his pride and joy when he got it back in High School.

You could always restore the old bike and take it on tour!

I run right about 70 gear inches on my Fixie, 39x15. That is a great all around gearing, I'm going to try 48x17 next week (76" if I remember right) and see if I'm strong enough to do the local hills with that. I can do them 39x15, but I'd like a bit more flat speed and a little less RPMs on the step down hill.

If you have never riden fixed before, take it a bit slow. It was harder on legs at first than I thought. Now I do up 70 mile rides on it no problem. I rode 90 miles today on my Tri bike and just felt like cheating!
