I am getting a lot of information about training etc. I have people that tell me that I need to swim bike and run 4x a week. In a perfect world where I don't have to work, that is possible, but I am strapped for time. I know the work and time this involves, but I wanted a no frills straight forward training program. Fortunately I have weekends off so I can afford my long rides and long runs. My weakest is the bike due to the time constraints. It's much easier be able to swim and run since you can pretty much do either one in the dark or when its wet outside. I read about doing bike workouts on the trainer, but not just to spin a little but were talking a workout on efficiency intensity hills (its all flat here) and intervals. I was planning on doing it outside where I can feel the wind heat and humidity. If I do the trainer workouts 1 to 2 x a week and do my long rides Saturday's is it possible for me to finish my first half ironman in 12 weeks? Morning rides during the week are our of the question. I also have been reading on "be ironfit" by don fink and following it until the half ironman. I like his philosophy of efficient training. It's all about quality not so much quantity. I was gonna tweak it and use the just finish and intermediate program based on my needs. Has anyone have any success in using his program? I'd really appreciate your input. Oh by the way I have been a triathlete for 2 years. Within those 2 short years, I have done 5 sprint tris, 3 half marathons, 3 duathlons, 4 10ks and 5 5ks so i am in decent shape.

You've said a lot without saying much. What kind if weekly volume are you managing with your schedule? Are you following a HIM training plan? If you're wondering if a couple trainer sessions can substitute for a similar number of miles on the road, the answer is yes.

Swim 2 to 3 x a week for 2000 to 2500 meters per sessionRun 3x a week total. Since I just finished a half marathon a few weeks back so I cut my volume from 20 ton25 miles per week to 10 to 15 miles, but this week I will be back at 20 to 25 miles per week and plan to keep it at that volume. Bike 2x on the trainer for 1 hr each.....Saturday rides are gradually increasing in mileage....I was supposed to do 40 today but did 25 since I wasn't feeling well...It did quite upset me when I was told I wasn't doing enough but this is all I can fit in my schedule.Oh and yes I swim in the dark. I go to a local gym here that is 24 hrs and they have a lap pool, but it's lit

Are you following a plan? If not look at some here on this website.

Cycling is longest part of HIM for most folks.

If you are stronger at some sports and weaker at others, good to focus on your weakness instead of doing the most of what you are good at.  From what you have said more time on the bike will help you more. Do you have a trainer so you can ride your bike when it is dark outside? If not look at investing in one.

You may want to join one of the 2012 mentor groups that focus on HIMs and you can learn a lot from others here on this site.
