Subject: I LOVE FLORIDA!

While on my morning run, under a star filled sky with a salt sea breeze blowing in my face, I couldn’t help but think how lucky I am to be a triathlete who lives in Florida!  So we have our gators, sharks, and afternoon thunderstorms that put a damper on swim workouts, but I’ll take that ANY day over the cold and snow.   It’s January.  I ran in a tank top and shorts!  Treadmill, what’s that?  Bike trainer, only importance to me is for a bike fitting.  We get to train outside the large majority of the year.  We get to cool off in the OCEAN after a long, hot brick in the summer.  Heck, we can OWS all day long! I don’t think I’d be in this sport if I didn’t live here.  I salute the "Winter Warriors" of the North for their dedication, despite the cold.  As for me, I’m proud to be a Floridian and don’t plan to be anything else!  Heat and humidity, bring it on!  (I might not be this excited come July… but felt the need to share now...)

I agree, the ability of being outside 12 months is one of the things I really appreciate.

It's great!  Of course, I'm usually singing a different tune in August.

Group ride today with over 20 people, we split into two groups. Did I mention it was a brisk 64* out and everyone was smiling like crazy? We kept about a 19 mph average, and that was the slow group. Where else can you get that kind of turnout with that kind of ability at this time of year?

Gotta love it!

I Love August!!! It means 85 degree water temps and I'm definitely a warm water person. (Wasn't someone complaining about people who use wetsuits in pools!! Must've seen me Wink.)

BTW, just watched my wife and a whole bunch of her favorite friends run the Susan G. Komen 5K this morning. Nobody was wearing a hat or gloves!!

Yep.  June-Oct in FL can be brutal.  The snowbirds have the right idea.

Picture this:

Saturday JANUARY (Yes, January) 28 - 7:00 AM

Me and another member of the Fishhawk Triathlon Club meet at our heated yet outdoors pool to practice sprint triathlon training.

Swim for 20 mins in warm water, followed by a T1 where changing into a tritop and putting on some thin running gloves will suffice, after 15 mi hard bike, pull in for T2 and a 5k run.

A great 2Hr workout.  About the same it will take for an indoor trainer or treadmill workout.  By the end of the tri, the temp had climbed up to 65F

Training in Florida?  Yeah, I dig that!     Thanks to all others who shared their own experiences here.  Makes you realize and appreciate it even more.

What are these wetsuite things everyone is talking about?  I love my OWS and heated indoor YMCA for other days.

I prefer training in the summer, I credit it to my PR/AG win last Oct.  Nothing better than racing after the first "cold" front of the season comes through 3 days before raceday!  I had a friend stop by last Sept while I was on the trainer in the garage sweating up a puddle. She asked "How can you stand doing that in here its a sauna?", All I could say was "because race day will be nothing compared to this"!

@OP, definitely right on, been here now 12 years and never leaving!

I wanted to ask that you guys to please, stop doing this.....

I prefer my rides in solitude and quiet!   I don't want the entire eastern seaboard to flock my warm outdoors pool, or congest my roads and trails.  I got enough with the ones who already know about it.

Let's keep it our little secret.   Innocent shall we?

LOL

I couldn't agree more.  I have lived here a little over two years after moving from Kansas, and am still amazed at how nice it is.  I'm a warm weather person so even the summer months don't bother me.  And in return, we get incredible winters with beautiful weather and wonderful fresh fruit and veggies.  Not to mention race possibilities every weekend and tons of things to do.  Oh, and no state income tax is great too! Cool

The best place for people who love being outside! I really enjoy living here, going on my daily runs at the beach, visiting the NPs.
People here are amazing! Also the big flea market in Pompano Beach last month was one of a kind of event!
Lifestyle here is just wonderful and you have to love it!
But we should not brag too much about it, because then everybody wants to move here!!

I grew up in Florida. Lived here for 26 years. Left in August 1996 to Chicago and finally made it back June 2016. Hated it up there and so happy to be back home.

Now.... For the training part, my running has really sucked since moving back. Holy cow is it going to take quite awhile to get used to running here compared to up there

Nonetheless I am going to finally love the Winter again
