Pre-race routine:

Alright so this is my second half marathon. My first half was the same race last year. Last year, I did it in 1:44:04 with GI problems in the last 3 miles of the race. Could have done better but oh well.

I tried to train for 12 weeks for this race. It's not a very structured program but my plan of action was to build mileage up to the first 6 weeks. After the first 6 weeks, incorporate speed work. I worked my way up from 25 miles up to 60 mile weeks which was hard! Some people would see the increase too much since it was not under the 5% norm. Oh well.

Also, the week before the race, I got sick with cough and colds which sidelined me for a week. The week of the race, I was only able to run once. So the two weeks prior to the race I only ran twice for a total of 13 miles.

Race Day:
Due to the sickness, I pretty much threw out any super expectations for the race. I sure wanted to break 90 minutes since I was able to do a 12-mile 80 minute run just before I got sick.

I also started lat on my wave since the line to the porta potty was long and it was a 30 minute wait in the line. Knowing my history last year, I downed a couple of immodiums when I woke up and forced myself to go before the race

I started with the 1:58 pacers since that was the group that I caught when I started. My general plan was to never to have a pace under 6:50. I stuck to that pace like flies on sh!t...

I felt really good on the first half of the run. First four miles were great! I had to verbally tell myself to slow down when I started to hit along the vicinity of 6:30 miles 'coz I don't want to run out of gas.

Heard a couple of my running friends shout out my name and I shout back at them and waved.

At miles 5 and 6, I got into a rhytm and went a little bit faster that I wanted to. Logic got the best of me and I slowed down again on miles 7 and 8.

Mile 9 was the turn around point and I told myself that it was time to kick it up a notch so kick it up I did! At miles 9 and 10, I really didn't care what my pace was and I just decided I would go faster. At mile 11, the right knee started aching but I just told myself to not even think about it. I just told myself, you already got sub 90 so just go ahead and suck it up.

Mile 12 was I decided to go for broke. I was almost in a complete sprint on the first 800 meters. I slowed down a little bit but then I heard the announcer so I kicked it up again. I felt like a gazelle on the last 400 miles and I raised my hands on the finish shute.

Post Race:
I felt really good about this race. I guess being sick kinda helped me out. I'm definitely well rested for the race. I also didn't feel tired after the race. Average heart rate was 165 which is still a bit high considering I was maintaining 155s on tempo runs. I attribute that to adrenaline and I was still coughing a little bit. I'll be honest, I had dreams of breaking 85 minutes before I got sick but I forgot about it on race day. I also know that I could have probably gone a little bit faster at the start and somewhere along 6:35 miles but oh well...

So yeah, MISSION ACCOMPLISHED! I lowered my half marathon time by 17 minutes, came in at 1:27:29, and broke top 25 in the very fast 30-35M division. Now it's time to nurse the sore calves and right knee...

And more swimming and cycling for sure!

Great job on the huge PR!  (I was proud enough of dropping mine by a minute yesterday...17 minutes...wow!)

It was interesting looking at the bib numbers in the results and seeing who finished up front that didn't start in the front corral...looks like you were one of the few in that category.  Congrats!

Thanks a lot tc!  Yeah it's a huge PR and I'll definitely take it!

I actually started late due to the long line to the toilet.  Knowing I had GI problems late in the run on the same race late year, I wanted to force myself to go.  It definitely worked and no GI problems for me.  I bet the two Immodiums helped as well.

Starting later also meant I had to do a lot of weaving!  I started with the 1:58 guys and you can imagine how much weaving I had to do.  I caught up with the 140 pace but that was it.

Thanks dm!  I'm really happy with the result considering how little run I had the past two weeks prior to the race.

I also placed 24th place in the freakishly fast 30-34M division so that makes me happier!!!

Congrats with your race too!
