Reading the email from 3D sounds like the city is doing a impact study?  Is this event still on the chopping block due to some of the whiny business owners?  Wish I knew who some more of them were besides the couple I've run across as I'd prefer to spend my money on those that support us.  I don't think anything will change some of these guys minds as there all ready set in there ways.

I'm the city's liason for the triathlon and I will give you a list of those that strongly support the triathlon. It may not be all inclusive, but I am confortable that these are the businesses that want you here.

Niemans Family Market, Mooney's Ben Franklin, Mr. Jack'ss, Marion's Villiage Chocolatier, Brew Crew, McDonalds, WKJC, B-Rock, Los Cuatro Amigos, Timberlane Resort, Jerry's Marine, O'Conners and Me.

We have done a lot to work out the kinks over the past year, including the new ICU format for the transition area and putting it all on Newman Street. I think that the new set up is going to be more spectator friendly, athlete friendly and business friendly. I am very excited for the change. The economic impact survey is for 3D, but also to show the community the value of this event.

Next year we will have all new asphalt to ride on, including a 3ft paved shoulder. The construction project just started, I have been assured it will not affect the course. The heavy construction starts next week. As always I am looking for suggestions. I am working on the seating issue. I think I have something worked out.

I don't believe it has ever been mapped out for Mapmyride. I don't know what I was thinking, I should have done it this summer.

I really appreciate all you've done so far and will do this weekend!!!  Quick question, do you know there will be porta-johns in or near transition like there have been in the past.  Doing the Oly the last few years it wasn't a concern, but doing the 1/2, and being a HUGE over-planner, I'd like to have an idea where they'll be.

I don't know, but I will see Kenny later this morning and ask him. I think there always have been, but with the changes, I don't know how that will work. I know there is going to be one at the bike aid station by Cooke Dam.

I missed a couple of businesses Seymore Carpet and Furniture and Klenows market.

Mr. Jack'ss is running a triathlon special. I don't have the menu yet, but it will be a high carb meal at a discounted price. As soon as I have the menu, I will post it.

Ted. 3d email states johns at the run in/out on West over streetJim, thanks for the list. Hope to cross paths with you in the next few days. Mr jacks and Niemans are normal stops while were in town. Might hit the Mexican restaurant tomorrow for a margarita and some grub. For one of the opposing businesses the little store in the loop drive near the beach and campground gate had nothing good to say about us. Won't be purchasing anything from her again after or chat last year.

That is marmar gormet. You can purchase similiar goods from the brew crew and incredible baked goods at the sweet course on the 1st block of Newman. I will be helping set up the transition area after 4 tomorrow and will be loitering around downtown during registration Friday. Just hunt me down.

Alright, now that I know where the bathrooms are, onto obsessing about other things.  With the winds projected out of the NNW, I assume most of the bay is protected from these, versus if the wind had at all been out of the East, right?  I raced the sprint the first year in the storms and am trying to remember where the wind came from.  I thought it was the south west with the remnants of Hurricane Ike.

The only bad winds on the bay are out of the South East, Everything else is protected. If it is windy NNW is the best direction. That will mean an off shore wind and it won't get rough until 400 or 500 yards off shore. We should be good to go. I did that sprint and the wind was out of the South East. I remember making the first turn and it was like swimming with someone spraying a garden hose in your face.

A NNW wind will make the first leg of the bike tougher. That is an uphill overall grade and the wind will be in your face. after the first 14ish miles and you turn onto River road all will be good. It also means that you will have a tailwind for the last 14 miles.

I did that race, the half, as well and to this day it was one of my favorite.  Rougher water separates the weenies that choose to walk when they can from the people that actually want to do a TRIathlon.  Here's hoping for ROUGH water.

AeroBaldness - 2012-09-05 6:55 AM Has anyone mapped the 1/2 bike course on MapMyRide?

I made this route based on the directions, so the turnarounds aren't exactly correct.  I'm not sure if it's viewable or if you have to add me as a friend to see it.  I tried to make it public and then logged out to see if the link works, but it keeps saying I have to be friends so I'm not sure what it's doing.  Maybe there's some individual map setting I can't find.

THANKS!!  I just sent you a friend request.  I can see the small map at the bottom right, but cannot launch it.  Based on your profile, you have a heck of a drive up for the race.  Safe travels!!

I'm probably not doing this one.  My planned race last week got cancelled due to the remnants from the hurricane dumping rain on us.  I've been looking for a replacement and will probably do Deer Creek Fall Challenge in Ohio on the 23rd, but was checking this one out since I have this weekend open.  The drive is a bit long and it looks like all the hotels/motels/cabins are full other than some place in Oscoda that's $100 a night.  I could probably pay the ridiculously high fee for Rev3 Cedar Point at this point and it would cost about the same given the extra gas I'd use.  I am still tempted simply because the bike looks rather scenic and isn't too hilly, though Deer Creek's elevation range is less than 50ft which is good for me.

Thanks for approving the request and for the map.  That 3D flyover is so cool.  Having done the Oly, I am excited to see the rest of the bike course.  As you get away from town and enter the national forest it awesome!!

Water felt great yesterday. I swam without a wetsuit and was fine. K felt a tad to warm in hers. Winds were out of the SE making things choppy. My only concern is with the strong winds out of the N or NW it will blow the warm water out and replace it with deeper cold water. The swim setup is so much better now that its in deeper water. Once you get around the yellow start buoy you can stay near the buoy line for deep water or had back towards shore for more shallow water. This set up should work well for those who want to swim.

Were in site 161 at the city campground. Not sure how weather will play out but were normally hanging there in the evenings enjoying a little fire and maybe a drink or two Saturday with a football game playing on the tube.

How did the water end up being this morning?  It's very windy here in the Detroit area and it seems that the Rev3 sprint got canceled because of water conditions and a flooded bike course... I'm wondering if you guys had to swim in choppy water up there?

Near perfect conditions, with the bay protected for the west winds.  Only negative was that the darn sun came out, making siting on the back leg tough.  I found myself in the interior of the course, siting the inside buoys in error, twice.

I am a newbie to the race, and triathlons, but I have watched the two previous years' races and I liked the finish and transition area.  It was encouraging to have people on the street cheering while in transition.

Also, I know they were looking for information on the economic impact and had requested some info at the registration.  I didn't complete any form but would be happy to supply the info if it is helpful to the event organizers.

Lastly, I understand you are the liasion with the city.  I'm sure that takes quite a bit of time during the year.  Thanks for taking the time away from training, work, and family.

Great race yesterday, perfect conditions. I was pretty pleased with my 5:08:57, especially considering I'd done a full IM 13 days earlier.

Another great race in East Tawas. Seemed like racer numbers were down. Starting to wonder if 3D is raising prices to much. Its gone up quite abit in the last few years with no added value. Either way we'll keep coming as we love the town and ending the season here. New transition and finish was nice and I thought it worked well. Just wish 3D would actually have officials on the bike as there was some serious drafting going as usual. I didn't see the pace lines as in years past so that was a plus.

Wow 126 finishers for the half this year... last year there were 160, the year before that 173. And before that 156.  (Kept going until it wasn't a decrease! )  Better for the visual:

2012 : 126

2011: 160

2010 : 173

2009 : 156

(As per what I found, I don't guarantee accuracy! )
