Subject: Rear tire has a bubble...help!

My bike is new...a little over 1 month old.   I put it on the trainer for the 1st time today and noticed a bumping noise from the tire in back.   On inspection the tire has a "bubble " on it ?     I have never seen this before and I didn't notice it while riding on the road. I have not had any problems with the tires and have only put a little air in them so far.

Is this dangerous?? Can the tire blow out like an automobile? Is it the tube causing the bubble?

Sorry if I sound naive...I don't have a lot of bike knowledge.

A little bubble?  That's your inner tube popping through - tire has a little rip.  If it's small you can patch the inside of the tire.

Need more info on the bubble.

Is it on the tread? On the side-wall? Is it the tube?

Can you post a pic?

Sorry , I posted too soon.  There doesn't seem to be a rip in the tire, it just bulges out.. sort of to the side.

Wish I could see a pic. Does it look like a "build-up" of rubber on the outside of the tire? Can you take the tire off the rim, pull the tube out, and see if that spot is thinner--in which case it's probably the tube causing it. If the later is the case, I'd be weary of riding it on the road because it's probably only a matter of time before the tube works its way through and pops. Of course, you could always "patch" the tire, from the inside.

I know this isn't very helpful but, as I say, hard to tell without seeing it.

I guess its a good thing I can't make it for the Mooseman ride tomorrow.

Trainers show every flaw and increase wear and tear. It's time to label that tire as the trainer tire. You only need a rear trainer tire.

Talk to the LBS where you bought it from a new one. Sounds like it could have been a flaw to start with. If they want your repair and equipment business they should give ya new one.

Get a new tire...it is not worth a blow out at 30+ MPH, save the trip to the ER, new helmet, scraped up bike and skin.  Most stock tires are on the cheap side to keep the price down.  OBTW I had a tire split on me during a race, at first the really loud bang scared the crap out of me but I quickly realized that was nothing compared to riding on the rim.....

check out www.biketiresdirect.com   I recommend the Continental GPs (3000 or 4000) or the Michelin Pro Race 2.

Did you over inflate the tire?  I had a tube blow out due to that.

Patty, I just replaced a rear tire with a bubble too.  I had gotten a tiny steel sliver in the side of the tire, but it didn't go all the way through the rubber to puncture the tube.  What happens is it cut the threads of the tire material itself, weakening it and causing it to bubble out.  It sounds like you have a similar weak spot in the rubber, and it could be caused by a number of reasons.  But the weak spot is a dangerous situation and could suddenly blow out, and you don't want that to happen on a fast downhill.  Don't take any chances, have the bike shop replace the tire and toss that one out.  Even saving it as a trainer tire is not really worth it as you'll always have that annoying "bump" when you ride.

Hey everyone,

Thanks for the advice. I guess I will be getting a new tire on Monday. Better safe than sorry !   I guess the trainer is good for something, because I wouldn't have noticed it otherwise!!
