Pre-race routine:

Event warmup:

Ride out to start then a short run before the start.
Run
  • 19m 24s
  • 3.11 miles
  • 06m 14s  min/mile
Comments:

Felt awful pretty quickly but due to having only got to bed at 2:30am after going to a wedding reception I think the run was ok, I had planned on running sub 19 for the first run and sub 20 for the second but fatigue and general fitness were not there.
What would you do differently?:

Get to bed earlier!
Transition 1
  • 00m 45s
Comments:

T1 was fairly quick but could have been sharper.
What would you do differently?:

focus a little more on getting to the rack and speed up the shoe change could have saved maybe 10secs.
Bike
  • 54m 1s
  • 27 kms
  • 29.99 km/hr
Comments:

The bike went fairly well, I was jockeying with 2 other riders for the first 2 1/2 laps but decided not to chase on the final climb of Parbold. Descending was OK.
What would you do differently?:

I could probably have pushed a little harder certainly on the flat and slight descents, I don't think I should have backed off on the third lap, I was concerned about cramping on the second run and cost myself as much as a minute which was 4 places at the finish
Transition 2
  • 00m 54s
Comments:

again I lacked a bit of sharpness in transition but it was the first event of the year and the first time in transition since September
What would you do differently?:

Focus and sharpen up, it was only seconds but there were 4 people finished less than a minute in front.
Run
  • 21m 1s
  • 3.11 miles
  • 06m 46s  min/mile
Comments:

Head down and keep going. my previous nights lack of sleep and poor diet (wedding buffet and pizza) finally caught up with me, there wasn't a lot else I could do on this run, my legs were tired but also mentally I was just counting down the steps to the finish, I could see people behind me at various points on the course and had already relinquished some places.
What would you do differently?:

Don't go out the night before a race. This was just a season opener and a bit of a training session.
Post race
What limited your ability to perform faster:

Fatigue!!

Event comments:

All in all a good start to the season, I could probably have got a top 20 place but there is a long way to go to September and as with last year my training is a couple of months behind everyone else
