If you're having trouble holding an easy pace, get a heart rate monitor with an alarm and set it at about 80% of your maximum heartrate. When it beeps, slow down or walk until you're back under control. I've done this since December and my low HR pace went from around 11:30/mi to now around 8:00/mi. I now try and stick to 9:00-9:30/mi and my HR is even lower.

I did a 1 hour run today with my HR around 80% the entire time. It came out to be a ~12min/mile. Somewhat frustrating slow.

How much (hours/miles) should I do a week at this rate?

I am planning on doing two runs (1 hour each) during the week, plus a 3 mile brick (run) and long run/walks on the weekend (15+ miles).

What about the biking, does the same philosophy apply there?

I found a solution - THE TREADMILL!

Pardon?

Pardon?

A solution to my problem of having difficulty running slow on my "slow" or "easy" running days.

I seem to always run @ the same pace and have been having difficulty slowing down.

You're going fast, but if you really do 2x/day for 20 weeks you will probably be fine. I did it in 24 (w/ wedding and honeymoon in weeks 18-21) last year, and if you dig around the older posts there are lots of people who ask if they can do it and are met with a similar response. If you feel you can do it, you're already on your way. Follow the training and IMO you will hit your goal. I don't like running slow in training and it hurt me this year. Maybe I'll do better in my training next time.Good luck!

Thanks bud.  I have been enjoying training so far.  After looking at the last week of the training program - I realized I was going to finish the 20 weeks to soon....so I started over.

I am wrapping up week 20 - will do week 19 twice and week 18 twice.  Then will finish the rest of the training right on time for my first Ironman.  The result is that I am easing into the 2 workouts per day more - and I end up with 26 weeks of prep.

Like I said - I do have the time as I work from home - so I set my own schedule.  Some days I feel like running in the morning, so I get up early and run, other days I feel like running around 4:00 p.m. so I stop working - go for a run.  Then I make dinner and after dinner I go for my swim (or bike depending on the day).  The flexibility is great.

That's how I learned to run slow. People hate it, but the treadmill can be a very useful tool for a number of things.
