Pre-race routine:

Arrived at site very early, got a great parking spot, took my time with transition and got setup, new it was probably going to be a long day. Have been in an outage for the last 40+ days and been working nightshift. Got off Thursday morning and have been trying to turn around to a normal way of life without much success. Needless to say I was up very early today for the drive over.
Event warmup:

None, time trial swim and lake was closed after 7:45am and my swim launch was not until 8:40am. Figured I would do what I could with the swim. I do not think the lack of warmup affected my performance in anyway.
Swim
  • 34m 3s
  • 1640 yards
  • 02m 05s / 100 yards
Comments:

Actually not a bad swim for me and the amount of time I continue to not put in the pool. Probably lost about 30 seconds with sighting issues. Locked in on a boat buoy when I should have been looking at the swim buoy. Nice kayaker put me back on track pretty quickly.
What would you do differently?:

Not much, more swimming?
Transition 1
  • 01m 57s
Comments:

Struggled getting my suit off but too my amazement not off of my heel with the chip but my right heel. Transitions are typically something I do well with, but not today in T1.
What would you do differently?:

More lube on heels
Bike
  • 1h 25m 34s
  • 27 miles
  • 18.93 mile/hr
Comments:

As stated above I was not prepared for this but did the best I could given my current hill fitness abilities. I had not previewed the course but it would not have made much, if any, difference. I held back some as I was unsure of the run course but assumed during the ride it would be rolling hills at least. Probably should have pushed a little harder.
What would you do differently?:

Train on hills, if I can find them.
Transition 2
  • 01m 4s
Comments:

1st in age group here, 53rd overall. Got stuck coming into the chute, which was about 1/4 mile behind two slower riders, probably affected my bike time by 20 seconds or so.
What would you do differently?:

Not much, happy with T2
Run
  • 53m 9s
  • 6.21 miles
  • 08m 34s  min/mile
Comments:

People had talked about the biking but to be honest this run course was way more difficult than the bike. There were two killer hills, although not big, but having run in Western MD, the grades on these hills reminded me of the Westernport wall. Surprised at my pace as I walked 4 times for probably 2 minutes or so combined.
Post race
Warm down:

Walked around, got bike, cleaned up

What limited your ability to perform faster:

Lack of hill training

Wind: Cross-winds with gusts
Course: Two loop counterclockwise rotation. One steeper hill coming out of transition as well as 2 others on the course which we repeated. Definitely was not ready for this course as all of my training has been conducted outside in the flatlands of southeast NC. Definitely has me rethinking my iron distance plans and I may opt for a flat course for my first.
