Pre-race routine:

Woke up at 5:00 AM. Had a bagel and diet coke.

What a super morning. Great weather, the flat irons in the background, a couple of hot air balloons lifting off and about 300 of your closest friends getting ready to jump into a lake.
Event warmup:

Did a light swim. 60 degree water is mighty cold
Swim
  • 16m 39s
  • 750 meters
  • 02m 13s / 100 meters
Comments:

This was my first competitive open water swim and it was awesome. It was a wade start with both men and women 'newbies' starting together. About 100 people in all. The gun went off and the washing machine started. Nothing too major just a little bumping and a few kicks. The funny thing was because we were all newbies everyone was saying "sorry" and "pardon me". After the first buoy things thinned out a bit and I was able to get into a rhythm. Loved my new wetsuit!
Transition 1
  • 04m 2s
Comments:

Would like to improve my T1 time. I sat down to take off my wetsuit.
What would you do differently?:

Stand to take off wetsuit
Bike
  • 53m 21s
  • 13.1 miles
  • 14.73 mile/hr
Comments:

Overall a pretty good ride. I would have liked to have averaged around 17-18 mph on the bike, but this was a good guage of what I need to work on

What would you do differently?:

Push harder, I need to get more miles in on the bike
Transition 2
  • 02m 1s
Run
  • 39m 54s
  • 3.1 miles
  • 12m 52s  min/mile
Comments:

First mile was the toughest. Had to run/walk for a little while. Ran the rest at a slow pace
What would you do differently?:

Run faster!

Just like the bike, this was a good indicator for what I need to improve on
Post race
Warm down:

Hugged my wife and carried my son around to chat with my friends and family who came to support me

What limited your ability to perform faster:

Need to run and bike more. Incorporate speed drills into my training

Event comments:

Great event.

Great job Jason!  Now that you've done it, you'll improve for the 3rd race (same course!).  Cool!

Great job, the best thing about finishing a race, especially a first one, is that after all the training we've done we now can go back to training with a purpose.  We all have weaknesses and it is fun to start making them stronger.  Congrats.

Good for you!! And thanks for the race report...I am thinking of doing the 3rd race in this series but was worried about where the bike portion was and how hilly it might be - sounds OK. I too am a beginner - haven't even done a tri yet (1st will be Danskin in July). Your report is so inspiring to others of us who are just learning about this ordeal - thanks and again...CoNgRaTuLaTiOnS!!!
