Boom Baby!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Saturday was a blast!. Things I learned from the race...

1. The swim wasn't even close to being as bad as I had thought it was going to be.

2. Accessories maybe nice during training (seperate post to follow on this one), but race day go witht he bare minimums. I.E. socks, cycling gloves, mp3 player.

3. BIB BELTS NEED TO BE MANDATORY IN RACES. Seriously...to anyone out there that hasn't gotten one yet. GET ONE! Both myself and my training partner ripped off three safety pins trying to put our shirts on, and I ended up running half the 5k with my wrinkle bib in hand. I headed straight over to Fox Valley Running Club after the race to get an 8 dollar bib belt. SO WORTH IT!

4. The swim wasn't even close to being as bad as I thought it was going to be.

5. GU WORKS! gosh, that stuff is good. If it wasn't so expensive, I would ditch the whole eating thing. 15 min before, then every 45 min.

6. watermelon and oranges are God's gift to endurance races.

7. The swim wasn't even close to being as bad as I thought it was going to be.

8. Support is a MUST for first timers. Having fans cheering you on is AWESOME!

9. This stuff is addicting. I mean REALLY ADDICTING.

10. WHY IN THE WORLD WAS I SO WORRIED ABOUT THE SWIM. IT WASN'T EVEN CLOSE TO BEING AS BAD AS I THOUGHT IT WAS GOING TO BE!!!!

Can't wait until the Mighty Wolf Triathlon. Only 4 weeks (and I have a 5k coming up in two weeks to keep myself occupied.)

You have no idea how good it is to hear you say continually that the swim wasn't near as bad as you thought it would be. My first tri is the 25th and my swim is going to consist of about 100m of freestyle followed by me flipping over on my back to rest, then again and again. I'm going to be one of the last ones out of the water. But I WILL FINISH!!

I'm going to go buy a bib belt now.

Awesome job!!! Glad to hear you had a good swim and a good race. Like Jared, I too am worried about the swim, so it's nice to hear another person say it's not as bad as you thought.
My first tri is 6/10 !!! After reading your report, I get more excited.

CONGRATS!!! Now on to the next one.

Congratulations, triathlete!!!  Can't wait to read your race report.

Just so you know, though, MP3 players are against the rules in any USAT-sanctioned event.  You might not get caught, but if you do there will be a penalty for it.

Congratulations, triathlete!

CONGRATULATIONS TRIATHLETE!!!

Very good advice about the number belt!  I had the same issue on my first tri.  My T1 time was 5+ minutes (YIKES!) due to fighting with a shirt and safety pins.  The race belt definitely helps along with swimming in a tri shirt instead of fighting to put a dry shirt over a wet body in T1.

Great news about the swim!  I think a lot of people have anxiety about it.  Actually, I think the worst part for me was waiting to start.  Once I started swimming, there was no time to think or worry about it.  Just put your head down and get 'er done!

Anyway, congrats again and good luck on your next race!

Congrats,  yeah, I forgot my race number because I had it pinned to my running shorts, which I decided not to put on in T2.

I agree about the tri shirt...That's one of the next items I plan on getting.

Oh my gosh! Before the race started the time keeper had us line up about 2 min before hand. Then sounded off at 1 min., 30 sec. then 15sec.... I WANTED TO DIE! that was So excurtiating waiting for that stupid horn to go off..

Does it get any easier in future races?

Ya know...it is....

People have all sorts of hobbies.... cars, NASCAR (dont even ge me started on that), golf, softball, chess....whatever, but doing something like this is totally different. You push your body in ways that most people can't even comprehend. I can't imagine what it'll be like in a couple of years when I go to Madison for IM.

I love it!

How bad was the swim?

Actually, I completely agree. I got into tri because I'd been a runner before, and I frequently bike 20 miles a day for my commute to work. So I just needed to learn to swim.

Yesterday was my first race and the swim was 1/2 mile. It was my best leg out of the three. In my AG, swim was 18th, bike was 28th and run was 20th. 25th overall for my AG.

Yeah, the swim isn't bad at all. Just focus on three things: Stroke, breathe, stroke, stroke, breathe, stroke, stroke, where are the buoys? Next thing you know, you see the bottom and you can stand up.

Now, the fun is getting that wetsuit off! Definitely practice that, especially from the calves down.

So glad to hear that about the swim! I am dreading my first, which is this weekend. I am taking the Total Immersion instruction...but I waited too long to start and am not where I need to be. Like someone else mentioned...I expect to spend plenty of time on my back.
