Has anyone done this tri before?  Would like to get thoughts / tips on the course from someone who has done it before.

Thanks.

I did this tri last year.  Last year they changed the venue and course completely from the year before.  It is at a standard pubic park (Parks Ferry).  This is the first year they are having the sprint along with the Olympic, so I don't know the sprint course that well. The swim is pretty standard triangle lake swim.  The bike is rolling throughout, and maybe a couple of steeper hills (nothing too bad).  But overall it is a fair course for Georgia.  What I remember the most was a very hilly run course (10K).  I think the 5K course this year is on the same road, so probably some hills there too.  The last .25 mile is downhill to the finish though, so that's nice.

Do you remember what the swim conditions were like and what the distance from buoy to buoy was?  The swim is setup as a 750 m swim so Olympic does it 2x.

Thanks.

Last year this race was in the spring, so it was wetsuit legal.  I don't remember the distance of the buoys, but normally they are 200 m apart.  There is one thing about the swim I need to mention... there are several medal poles out in the water as you get close to the beach.  They are like medal fence poles sticking up, so swimmers need to be on the lookout for them as they go and and come in.

I am surprised nobody mentioned anything about this race afterward. Some issues here?

What? Other than the comedy of errors involving the bike racks and what I'm convinced is the hilliest run course? No issues....

The bike rack issues were near disastrous.  I didn't hear of any bike getting severely damaged but wouldn't be surprised if it did happen.

I'm not a bike rack expert but just looking at them you could tell they were flimsy.

The run course was so friggin hilly and it was brutally hot and humid.

Other than those two issues I thought things went well but I don't have much to compare it to.

The bike racks were very flimsy.  I don't know if any bikes were damaged but i had to help a girl get out from underneath the bikes that fell on top of her.  She was ok just got greasy.

I thought it was poor planning to have the awards after the kids race.  Most people left after they finished.  I understand the computers crashed so they couldn't post any results.  No one knew how they finished and we couldn't find anyone to tell us what was going on.  Usually results are posted soon after you finish and if there are any problems/penalties you can ask before you leave.  But they never posted any results except for a few of the sprint.

We waited 5 hours for awards because my friend was the overall female winner in the Olympic.  The overall winners received a medal just like the finisher medals but gold in color and a different ribbon.  You would think for how much we had to pay to enter that the overall winners would get something special.

they couldn't complete the awards because the computers crashed and couldn't verify what awards they were giving out in the sprint.  They only did the overall, relays, athena and clydedales.  When we asked about the age group awards the announcer thought they were giving them out but he didn't know.  They didn't have any results for the kids races.  They said they would mail all the awards but that stinks that the kids didn't get to enjoy standing on the podium to get their awards.

Probably won't do this one again unless they make some changes.

and that was the hilly run course I have ever done.

For someone that wants our community to grow, this is hard to write, but I DEFINITELY WON'T EVER DO THIS, nor would I recommend this race to any youth.

I will be glad to send you a list of complaints and safety was also an issue for the kids. Just plain unacceptable, and I have heard literally no less than 10 people seriously complain in email and in person. I hate it because the location is good but the ball was dropped in many respects by the RD and when confronted he got defensive and didn't apologize publicly, telling one complainant that she should share his apologies for him.

Phat,

You should make the list and send to the RD and post it here, along with his response.

I'll be crossing this one off the list next year if they even bother trying to bring it back.  There are plenty of others that are well run.

Mrs. brown_dog_us - 2012-07-01 8:36 AM The dude who listed all of the problems with the race deleted his post.  Weird.

Judging by the screen name, there is a good chance it was the overall winner and he probably second guessed publicly berating the race and the RD.  I think it was probably a good call not to let those comments float for too long on the internet if you are in his position.

Personally, I bailed soon after the race so I didn't stick around to observe the computer/awards drama.  I kind of feel bad for the RD.  They had a day that went from bad to worse and it can be hard to maintain a good professional demeanor when you're having the day from hell.  I've got to say that it seems like it is taking them a long time to get their stuff together.  This is the third year they've run the race.

The price point corresponds to the type of event they are trying to run (prize purse, goody bags, and post-race food) but when you pay that amount there is very little tolerance for errors.

And....God help you if you screw up a kid's race because confusion, chaos, disappointed children, and pissed off parents is a whole different realm of having a bad day.  And if my son had participated, I probably wouldn't be very forgiving.

Honestly, I may participate next year.  The race has potential and they should certainly learn from this experience, right?  But it doesn't rank high on my list.

I thought everyone else was doing a good job of describing the issues with this race and I was going to let it go but now they have messed with my son's race.  First, I was really impressed with all the boys in the 6-8 year old group.  To finish that course with a mile run in that heat was impressive!  My son pushed it to the limit and left everything on the course and I couldn't have been prouder.  He really had fun at the race and was mainly oblivious to all of the issues we noticed along the way.  But when they took away his moment on a very cool podium because they didn't have the race results, that really ticked me off.  But he's a better man than I am and before I could even start complaining aloud, he was saying it didn't matter because he had fun racing (I have a lot to learn from him but I don't have to worry about that disappointment since I don't make it on the podium!).  But as a parent, you want your kid to get the full experience, especially when he did so well. So when the results werre published, it was unclear how they were going to be awarded because all of the 6-8 year old boys were listed together and their age on race day was listed next to their names.  I confirmed with the RD that the age-up rule applied and told my son that he won and that his medal would be coming in the mail.  He was excited and anxious to receive it.  Of course, in the mail today was a silver medal because the RD sent them out based upon age on race day.  Unbelievable!  I can handle all of the issues with the adult races but the ones with the kids race are inexcusable.

[UPDATE] Received an email from the race director who apologized for the confusion on the medals and is going to mail another one. I appreciate his owning up to the mistake.

awards are nice Brad. Thanks for mentioning. Still haven't received any acknowledgement that things were muffed up and safety for the kids was compromised. I don't want my money back. Just an apology and a promise to make amends.

I received my award medal in the mail along with another t-shirt.  If anything was done right it was that the dri-fit shirts they gave out are really nice.  Great fit.  Wish it showed that it was the Lake Oconee Tri better than their corporate logo.

I'm not defending the choice of flimsy bike racks but will also add that a lot of participants only made the problem worse after the first rack fell.  When that rack fell a large number of participants started racking their bike on the other racks causing two more of them to collapse.  This pretty much demonstrated a lack of common sense on their part.  Not exactly sure why they felt that adding more weight to other racks wouldn't cause them to fall either.

Anyone looking for a race in August or September :

Unfortunately due to an ongoing issue with South African customs our equipment will not return to the U.S. in time for ELEVEN Lake Oconee. Both South Africanand U.S. customs broker's have tried to resolve this but have had little success to make the race deadline.

The race will be postponed until August or September and as soon as a new date is confirmed the website will be updated and registration re-opened.

We sincerely apologize for this inconvenience and hope you'll join us later in the year.
