I know personally I will be doing the short course. Glad this one is semi close to home so don't have to travel over an hour away! Which race are you guys doing? Any advice from you guys that have done the short and long?

My event:  Long course

My advice:  Learn to climb hills on the bike

My event (if doc clears me tomorrow):  Short Course

My advice:  Same as what Jayhox said

If SM Tri is your event. get out there as much as possible to prepare.  A good workout is to do the OWS then bike.  If you're going to do the sprint, ride 3-4 laps minimum each time you're out there.  When you ride your normal route (from home etc.), ride hard.   Ride so hard that you might have to "limp" in at the end of a ride.  That's how I got to the 22-23 mph Oly speed you were talking about in the other post.

SM Park is sort of a technical course, I just did the KC Corporate Challenge Tri which is the same exact course.  A lot of short climbs and short descents.  The hill just after the dam (a.k.a. the "Dam Hill") will test many riders, especially the second time you go up.  You just need to realize you will be going very slow up that hill and need to be patient.

When I do a workout at SM Park my legs are toast afterwards.  I usually bring a nice helping of chocolate milk to drink after that ride because my leg muscles are in dire need of recovery afterwards.

Really just riding there a half dozen times or so before the race will prepare you, you'll figure out what you need to work on real quick.

I will be there. Haven't decided on distance yet. I agree with what Jahox and Reece said. Challenging hills on both the bike an run. In my honest opinion, the long course gets a bit boring. 4 loops is fun for spectators, but I get a little bored. People always talk about the hills on the bike, but you have to run up the dam hill as well. The descent into the trail is pretty steep as well. Then to top it all off you finish coming back up a nice hill to finish. I think the run is every bit as challenging as the bike, especially if you take the heat into account.

Has the race ever gone the full distance without a weather issue?

I think the past 4 or 5 years the race has been either cancelled or called short due to storms.

I raced it for the first time aside from Corporate Challenge and they called it just as I came into T2.

Good luck.

Last year.  But they could have called it due to heat, humidity, and stagnant air on the run and nobody would have complained.  Ugh.

I did it in 2006, 2007, and 2008 with no issues.

I could not agree more.  I am also back and forth about which distance I want to do.

I know a lot of people like multi-loop courses to help them break the race down (for longer distances anyway).  I am the opposite...my ideal race is single loop of all 3 disciplines.  I don't like to look at the same stuff twice.  Let's keep it new and fresh!

So no matter what the terrain, a 4-loop bike course is enough to dissuade me.  4 times up the dam hill only adds to that inclination.

All that being said, part of me still says HTFU and do the long course you wuss.  Plus I'm going to spend hours packing, prepping, driving, parking, etc for a 1 hour race?

How does this run compare to the Tinman run I just completed (long course)?  It's 3 miles shorter but Tinman was pretty flat.

Yes, it does sell out, it has every year for the last 3-4 years.  I talked to one of my friends at J.C. Parks and Rec. today, he said get registered now.  He's pretty certain it will sell out by Friday.

I'll get it done tomorrow. Thanks Reece! I think I'll go try to ride that loop a few times this weekend. I volunteered last year and was at therun turnaround, looked like it would be a fun race.

TriMan25 - 2012-06-19 10:02 PM The Short Course Run Map is a little confusing I know where trans is where do we go from there?

I tried to plot the course in mapmyrun but it doesn't register a start elevation.  The run exit is the south side of the bike racks, you then run north up the west side of the bike racks to the main road.  You take the main road west, then turn south towards the DAM hill.  When you get to the top of the DAM hill you will see a small parking lot to your left.  You will run to the end of that parking lot and circle around, then cross the main road into another small parking lot and catch the trail there.  You stay on that trail, it will split a couple of times, always go RIGHT for short course.

If you zoom in and set the view to Satellite you should be able to figure out the run course.  I ran it Friday, then again on race day so I know this is accurate.

The Shwnee Mission long course run is generally flat to downhill for most of the course.  However, you make up for that in two steeper uphill areas:  1) Right after you run across the dam (the Dam Hill) you have about 100m of stairstep-steep climbing, and 2) the last 1/2 mile to the finish starts with another stairstep type climb up to the northern tip of the dam then a continuous climb up to the finish line.  Not bad, just be prepared for those two climbs.  Last year the weather was in the 90's with sun, high humidity, and ZERO wind down in the run area.  It was stifling.

I'm in for the long course. We'll be in Hays for the 4th but this race gave me an excuse to come home a day early! It's going to be a fun racing weekend, a 5k in Hays on Saturday morning and then this Sunday. Not sure how smart that is but shouldn't be overly dramatic.  I think I'll try and ride the course 3 or 4 times over the next few days, but thats the only chance I'm going to get.

Ok, learning to climb hills. One maybe classified as a very short climb, dam and up, rest is rolling. Climbing hills is very different from riding rolling courses. Momentum in short rollers means a lot and short excursions above FTP get rewarded as long as cap is put on the effort not going much above your FTP. Climbing, that is a different story, long climbs vs. short climbs......

SMP bike course is the hardest thing besides Branson that I have ever ridden. 4 loops of screaming entire time is no easy task. Every time you are burning quads on every hill, you are taking away that much from that run to come, which by the way uses quads also in the last 1.5mi of the course, climbing yourself back up to finish.

I have brought myself almost to tears in both 2008 and 2010 climbing it, cresting the damn and picking the final climb up. I am relatively weaker runner. In 2008 I trained a lot in the park, 2010 none. It makes a difference putting time there.

2008 race finished, 2009 canceled, 2010, some long course finishers, than canceled, it is always hot and humid. Results show the difference for me if I train there or not. Be wise, do few rides there and runs as well. This course takes learning to do well.

I agree.  On paper, none of the distances are intimidating, but the course can chew you up.  The last .5 mile finish of the run UPHILL is absolutely brutal.

Headed over to ride it now, if you see a pudgy guy on a Felt road bike with a Boulevard jersey on struggling up the hills make sure I'm still operational.

That's a little rougher ride than I had anticipated. Throw in the temps and I can see this race being a bit of a beat down.  Laughing

As I mentioned before, I have done that race twice, 2008 and 2010, the hardest race I have done after Branson. This year I am no show as I have not trained for it, will not even poke my head there as if you are not ready for it, it can be a suffer fest. Luckily, it is short.
