Subject: Am I underestimating the Half Ironman?
I just found out I did not get into the NYC Marathon, so my backup plan was to consider the Delaware Diamondman Half Ironman in Sept. The question is, am I underestimating what it takes to do this?

I've done a total of...drumroll please....one....triathlon, a sprint.
Swimming is definitely a concern....I'm a little leery of the distance, but last week, I did a 1/2 mile swim in the pool (just over 20 mins), so realistically I should be able to work up to 1.2 mi. This is my biggest unknown.
Biking - I'm doing 20-30 mile rides at this point. Should be fine to do 56.
Running - half marathon is no problem for me, I've just never done it after 4 hrs of swim/bike before.

So taking each separately is no problem, but combining them all? I figure I can do it if I pace myself properly. I'm not looking to set any records here.
I'm signed up for a sprint tri in July and probably will do another in Aug.

But I still have this concern that I just don't know what it takes to train for this and to complete it. I'm going from sprint to half ironman....Am I jumping the gun here?

Appreciate your thoughts or words of wisdom on this...

Thanks.

Yes, you can do it! It sounds like you have a good endurance base. Now you need to focus. Find a 1/2 training program, count back from the tri date and jump into the plan, making any modifications that you deem necessary. Good luck and keep us posted.

I agree w/ Triman about the endurance. Although you have some self doubt I'm impressed by the fact that you say "so realistcally I should be able to work up to 1.2 mi." based on on your 1/2 mile.
You seem to have won the mental battle right there. Hit the pool and go for it! I had a similiar post about going from sprint to an oly and if I had your determination I'd sign up! I also think 2 spirnts b4 then will set you up well. Good Luck, Mark

DO IT! As you and others said, your base is there and with 12 weeks of training you have lots of time to practice :-)

I just did an Olympic Sunday and only did 1000 yards once in a pool back in March! I started open water swimming 10 days before the Oly, swimming three times. I did the Oly distance swim in two segments on the last swim. My longest open water swim before that was the 500 yd Sprint tri in April and really slacked off after it. Sunday I had no trouble with the 1.5k swim physically, it was 99% mental. I was in a zone after 5 minutes and just kept my own pace thoughout. Only 7 people swam it slower than me but I felt like a swim champ when I reached the exit and felt great!

It was great reading your question ! I'm exactly in the same situation as you ! I'm basically a marathon runner (I've done 4 in around 4 hours), did a Sprint last summer and I decided to do the Montreal 1/2 iron man in september ! so we'll see if we're crazy or not !!!!!!!!!

Thanks for the encouragement. I've given it some thought and I'm gonna do it. Don't really care about time, just finishing.

Interesting that you mention Montreal. I was considering that tri myself. Looks really cool. I just wonder if lap after lap on the racetrack is going to drive you nuts though.

I love to head up Montreal - I go up every spring to play in a hockey tournament. Alot of...um..."fine establishments" there.

you can do it but be prepaired to suffer. I did the race in Montreal but the full Ironman distance in 2001. I had four sprint tri's under my belt. It was very hard, hot humid, rain, I got crashed on the bike. If I can get time off work I think I will do it again this year. It's good because it is a nice venue and a completely closed course. The laps I liked because I knew what to expect and where everything was. It made for good fan support as well. People get to know you and cheer everytime around.

Boo hoo,
I just got my email that I too didn't get into the NYC Marathon. We all have to have goals so I say go for it. Proud of you. I'm just deciding what goal I should set for myself. I really don't like to run but thought the challenge was a great one. I'm definitely not where you are physically, and am getting ready for sprint tri #2.

On the Montreal course there is a little climb that isn't really a big deal but you do it many times. The only real problem is that the course is open to the elements. If it is windy, you feel it everytime around. Towards the end I was dreading coming around to the windy side. The years where the weather is good, cool not windy, the times are fast. Hot or windy days the times are slower. The run is totally flat but this isn't really a good thing because you run with the same stride and cadence the whole run and it can wear out your legs. A few hills to break things up is actually nice in a long race.
