Yep, lots of rolling hills with a few short but steep ones. The roads are in perfect condition though

Would I be crazy to consider doing this without a wet suit?

No the water is pretty calm and not too cold; it is a little murky and dirty though

I have to disagree with Eyeofthetiger.  It was 47 degrees last year when I got in the water to do this race.  I hate swimming with a wetsuit, but it was pretty cold, and I was glad I had the wetsuit on.  I don't remember seeing anyone without one, either.

True. It was colder than normal last year. I was going off my experience doing the Columbia tri though so have limited knowledge. My mistake!

Wow 47 degrees is really cold.  I can not even imagine swimming in water that cold.  Wetsuit or not.

I thought 47 was the air temperature last year... The water was warmer than that, wasn't it? Being in the water, in a wetsuit - not too bad. Getting out of the water - no thank you. Gloves, arm warmers, booties for the bike.

You know, my first two races had horrible weather. A smarter person probably would have quit after that...Tongue out

Water temp is typically in the upper 60s for this race.  I would say 95%+ wear wetsuits but a few brave souls do not.  Last year I saw one guy in a teeny tiny neon orange Speedo brief.  I think he was doing a relay though.

If you don't wear a wetsuit you will at least want to bring along a set of throwaway clothes to wear while waiting for swim start - as others have pointed out, the air is usually quite cold even if the water is not.

It was freezing last year!  My shoulders were tired from shivering before we even began.  Wetsuit and/or something to keep warm while waiting for your start (which can take a good while depending on your wave).  I also brought a ton of extra gear for the bike and run and needed almost all of it. You never know what you are going to get in MD in October.

Hilly (would have made this my first 70 except the bike is too hilly for me), nice roads, and great spirit.  Love Half Full.
